A few weeks ago, I read a very personally impactful post by Loreena Yeo. In the post, she quoted a line she saw in a client's email signature. "Someone's life may depend on you answering your calling." WOW! I read, and re-read that statement. I found those words very haunting and began some research and my own study (on-going) of callings. First, I'd like to thank Loreena for taking me in this direction.
I'm reading a book by John P. Schuster titled, "Answering Your Call". What is a calling? The exact definition - who knows? How about a throbbing sense to live a deeper and truer purpose. It's breathing your highest essence into an everyday role - whatever that role may be. It turns "used house sales people" into trusted advisors and HVAC sales people into comfort consultants.
Where do they come from? They come from God, of course. JER 51:29 for every purpose of the Lord shall be performed. But for those who don't believe: an invitation from the universe to be used and useful, to go deeper to live a fuller, more enriched life.
We live out many calls over our lifetime and unfortunately, we ignore some as well. What can be sadder than an unanswered call? It's an act of self denial due to fear (What will people say???), self-deception, or just the inability to discern. Inability to discern?? Why? To name a few reasons; because of so much hustle bustle, distraction, and the foolish notion that there's always tomorrow.
Ever had that nagging feeling that there's more to you and your purpose than you're walking out in your day to day life? Like a one-legged frog on a motorcycle, going round and round and round. You need to be quiet, very quiet, and long enough to feel the tug in your spirit.
Mr. Schuster mentions Doris Lessing's "Briefing For a Descent Into Hell" where God meets with us before we're born to give us our mission. As we live, we're vaguely aware of our assignment, but can't quite put our finger on the button. We know there's something important, but what?
Enter THE EGO - or as the bible would describe - THE FLESH! Ever told yourself that you'd love to take the family on vacation but "the timing wasn't right"? "The kids will understand. I'm doing it for them." Do you enjoy being a celebrity - the office's top producer (I confess I probably would!) at the expense of a balanced life? You've asked yourself these questions or ones like it, you feel the incongruence in your gut, but the BIG E answers back with one word: "MORE!" Beware!
Mr. Schuster quotes a speaker/friend who ends his program with:
