Radon: What are acceptable levels?

 

What is Radon and should you be concerned?      

Radon is a gas that exists beneath the substrate in rock and escapes up into the air through tiny cracks and fissures.

Even though there has been much published about the fact that Radon is also found in granite counter tops ,

                                     

              ...when we tested the radon in clients kitchens, we haven't shared the hysteria.

EPA states that  you should test your home for radon yearly and says that any household with 4 picoCuries or more should have radon remediation, which is simply installing a vent with a fan that allows the radon an escape route to the outside.

                    

The EPA also provides some interesting maps that show you the highest concentration of radon across the country.

    

 I don't know about you, but I wouldn't want to live in a house with any more than 2 picoCuries, since the EPA says this...

 ....is the same as smoking 2 packs of cigarettes a day! But each to their own!

 

Some people have theorized that

 Dana Reeves, wife of Christopher Reeves, had lung cancer due to her exposures of radon

So radon is definitely something to take seriously.

 

                  Radon is thought to cause thousands of deaths each year.

 

But remember...there is an easy fix.

New homes are having passive systems included in construction.

The radon test is inexpensive and easy as well!
