Yes, it's called the Corpse Flower because it smells like a 'dead body'! I haven't smelled it yet, but I'll try to go to the Museum this weekend. The Houston Museum of Natural Science is open 24 hours a day, so everyone that wants to, can get a chance to see this unique flower up close. I'm sure it'll be crowed! On the local news, people were standing in line out the door just to take a look/smell at this very unusual Corpse Flower nicknamed 'Lois'. It's scientific name is "amorphophallus titanum". Can you pronouce that?
The Corpse Flower is very rare & only blooms once in a hundred years! It is housed at the Cockrell Butterfly Center that also hosts hundreds of butterlies. It's a great feeling when you stand in this pyamid shaped butterfly center and butterflies galore are gently flying around! If you wear a brightly colored shirt and stand still, the butterfly will actually land on you!
Back to the Corpse Flower, well it is very close to being in full bloom! Take a look! This is a rare moment in history! This flower is a native of the Indonesian island of Sumatra. Apparantly it produces this horrific odor to attract bugs for it's nourishment. The temperature has to be hot & humid in order to survive.
Stinky Stinky Stinky!!!
But yet so beautiful!
