How do you stay on top of the latest news and trends?

Branding yourself as an expert is critical.  It can be difficult to stay up to date on the latest news and trends but you owe it to your clients to BE the expert in your area.  Clients expect this and will give you more referrals if you wowed them with your area and industry knowledge.

I am constantly preaching about the benefits of staying organized.  Anything you do more than once deserves a check list and this includes your consumption of news and education on trends.  Staying organized with everything you do helps you accomplish more in less time.

I recommend keeping a "punch list" of your news and trend resources.  You can quickly go through it and make sure you are on top of our constantly evolving industry.

Here are so me of my favorite news and trend resources ~

ActiveRain is my favorite "searchable" database of everything relevant in our industry.  If I have a topic where I need to see the latest real life conversations, this is where I go.  ActiveRain has never failed me in returning some excellent content provided by real people who are active in the market.

Housing Matrix  Our group keeps an eye on the latest news and trends.  We gather top news from several resources into one easy to read news feed focused on top news, market news, technology news, and other news.  This is the place to get up to date quickly on those busy days.

I personally think it's more relevant and important to just know your local market.  Most consumers really truly don't care what Inman News thinks, but they do want to know the state of their local market.

The local real estate market an agent, broker, REALTOR serves should be one the professional knows backwards, forwards, inside and out. Just like the local community. But less important to know what is happening in the Oregon, California market as it is not the one you swim in. Just did a blog about using your indoor real estate blogging voice to talk about the market..but your local market. Not trying to use your outdoor recess blogging voice to generalize the entire nation in one ten second sound bite. Not accurate, won't work and like a square peg in a round hole. Doesn't go in easy, at all, without a sledge hammer assistance.

I so AGREE that being very locally focused on your real estate knowledge is critical.  Agents in our area have found the Residential Transaction Study to be an incredible tool because we can get as local as a town, a subdivision, or even a street to analyze trends.  It also pulls in data that's not in the MLS to include For Sale By Owner stats.  The big national trends are good to know but not as good for actually serving local clients with real life assistance in buying and selling.  Having said that - our clients are very tuned into the national news and they have questions and need help understanding all the constantly changing rules and developments in our industry.  We have to be local and national experts!  Thanks for the comments... keep them coming.

I get daily/weekly updates on my Blackberry from Crain's, the NY Times, NY Magazine, and others (including a couple on your list). Last week a customer commented, "You know everything!"  I don't, but the more information we can supply, the more value we add as brokers.

Thank you for a great list of resources.  I think I just called my first shot!

Thanks Rosie.  I know.  I read it twice now (first in your email).  Let me know how to organize the card game for the Silver Fox Foundation golf tourney.  Randy.

Nice post Rosi... Probably one of the most important things all of us in the real estate related arena need to know is what's going on in our community.
