why do people moveWhy Do People Move?

Liz and Bill Spear posted a great read:  Your Nirvana Might Be My Hades - The Fallacy of Best Places to Live Lists

When I was thinking about why do people move I wondered if it had anything at all to do with what they've read on-line and/or in a published list.

Sure, people will read about a particular area . . . which is why Active Rain Localism is a great tool  But why do people move to one particular area over the other?  Is the why do people move answer have anything to do with the best places to live lists, or about more definitive reasons?

Paradise - Lucas Cranach 1536

My B.S. degree is in Social Science.  So this type of stuff has always fascinated me.  Although I really screwed up in the statistics component of that degree -- I don't like math -- I did find a good analysis.  The US Census has a table from 2007.  For those of you into this type of thing, you can find the table here:  US Census Reasons for Move (Note: numbers reflected in the chart are in thousands.  Example 543 = 543,000, etc.)

Main reasons of why do people move include:

  • New job / transfers
  • To be closer to work / school
  • To establish own household
  • Needed larger home or apartment
  • Wanted better home

Why do people move reflected an overwhelming number that "looked at other neighborhood."  Choice of present home had "financial reaons," "room layout/design" and "size" being key factors.

This data included owners and tenants, i.e., homeowners and renters.  But, it's still an interesting chart.

Maybe the "other" category includes, "I read about this area/neighborhood in a 100 top cities to move to" list.  Who knows . . .

Why do people move?  Well, the numbers seem to suggest it's because of practical reasons which has to do more with reality, and not the grass is greener of lists.

Interesting chart, Carla. I can't say I understand it.  I think I need to take those statistics classes.

Hi Carla, I think eventually it's a family "herd mentality". People eventually move where their family lives. I see it a lot down here. One family member moves down, then before you know it, they all move. jay

Carla...Interesting information.  I think I agree that most people make their move for very practical reasons - to be closer to work; have children attend a particular school; get a larger/better house; maybe even be closer to elderly parents.

I often fantasize about moving to the middle of no where (Wyoming), but you know I would probably not be happy.

Carla that's very interesting and it makes sense.  I have never served anyone who has mentioned a particularly area to live in because it was on some list.

Also, I see you and I have something in common:

  1. Your Bachelors degree. is Social Science and mine in Communications Management (both are behavorial based degrees).  I am also fascinated by what makes people tick.
  2. You hate math and I think "hate" is not strong enough language when it comes to math.

Hi Jane . . . statistically speaking, I actually do get that chart, which wasn't too hard for me ;-)

Hey John -- Florida would be a state where that might happen.  I'd have to do a study on that and run some stats . . . HA HA HA

Hi Robert . . . Or you!!

Hey Carra -- oh yes.  The aging parent is a big factor on why people move.  Not big enough, I'd say.

Hi Gene . . . the grass is greener in Wyoming -- or at least the spinach is!  I actually had the BEST spinach salad I have ever eaten at a roadside cafe while driving through Wyoming taking my son to University in NC.  Whenever I think of Whyoming, I think SPINACH SALAD!!

Hey Charita -- Great things to have in common, our love of people which is why we are fascinated by how they tick (because we wouldn't give a rat's patoot if we didn't care), and hate not being strong enough when it comes to math.  "Love people.  Hate math!"  That could be a good t-shirt!!

There are a ton of reasons that people move from one place to the next, but most of them are for lifestyle reasons. I for one moved the last time just because I wanted a change of scenery.
