The Connecticut Wine Trail: Third Stop Priam Vineyards sign

Our third stop on the Connecticut Wine Trail took us to the countryside of central Connecticut, to Colchester’s Priam Vineyards. Founded in 1998 and opened to the public in 2003, the winery produces 22 acres of grapes in the style of northern France and Germany. Having lived for many years in Germany and having developed a particular affinity for the Riesling varietal, we were particularly pleased to find that Priam Vineyards counts two Rieslings and a Gewurztraminer amongst the dozen or so award-winning wines they produce, and we couldn’t wait to give them a try.

Priam Tasting Room

As usual, we signed up for the wine tasting which gave us the opportunity to taste 10 of Priam’s wines. We were not disappointed with the pure Riesling, an off-dry wine with pleasant lemon, apple and peach notes and a clean finish. The second Riesling was the Jeremy River White, a semi-sweet blend which was very fruity and juicy in the mouth, a real quenching drink. The Gewurztraminer was a little less satisfying, being drier and less spicy than we prefer, but it was still an excellent offering. The other favorite we had among the samples was the Westchester Red, a semi-sweet wine with a hints of fig and dark chocolate on the palate and a crisp finish.

A Riesling with Lunch!

After the tasting, we purchased a bottle of the Riesling and retired to the sunny patio to enjoy with our lunch and the tranquil scenery. Priam Vineyards prides itself on being the first New England winery to produce their own solar power; they also practice sustainable agriculture and propagate bluebirds in the fields to assist in maintaining a healthy vineyard.

Priam Vineyards is located at 11 Shailor Hill Road in Colchester, and they’re open from 11am to 5pm for tastings every Friday, Saturday and Sunday between March 19th and December 31st. You can click here for directions. We certainly recommend visiting Priam soon, so bring a picnic lunch and enjoy it on the patio! And don’t forget your Wine Trail Passport!

As you're making this tour are you bringing along a designated driver? With the number of wineries in Ct at last count22 this trip could take quite a while. Save the corks as your souvenirs

Pat and Wayne, I would probably like the Jeremy River White.  I like my white wine on the semi sweet side.  I will have to make a trip up there it is not that far away.

Ed: Actually we don't drink a whole lot. The tasting samples are tiny, and we split a bottle of wine at most and drink it over a few hours. ends up being about 3 glasses of wine total. Easy peasy. There are actualy 29 wineries now, and one wine festival in Goshen, plus a 30th winery will be opening in Wallingford one of these days (Paradise Hill), we just don't know when!

George: Yes, the JRW was really good, and it was one of their cheapest wines at $16.50 a bottle. It was about a 40 minute ride for us, for you it should be even less. Watch for our next installment in the CT Wine Trail series!

Thanks for stopping by, guys!

Hi - It sounds like fun - I'll have to check it out.  I have only been to two vineyards in CT, one of which was Gouveia (sp?) in Wallingford - very pretty place!

Peggy: It makes for a very relaxing, stress-free day! Good wine, good company, good scenery, what more could you ask for! Gouveia Vineyards is our hometown winery, as we live in Wallingford, just a few miles from the winery, in fact. We're partial to it because we live here, but even if we didn't it would be one of our favorites. The post I wrote about them was the first in our CT Wine Trail series, Bishop's Orchards Farm was the second. Our upcoming posts will be about Chamard Vineyards in Clinton and Haight-Brown Vineyard in Litchfield, hope you'll check them out! Our next stop will be next weekend at the Connecticut Wine Festival in Goshen and we're really looking forward to that one!
