Iphone 4 Real Estate Video Sample - HDHat.com

HDhat's initial testing of the Iphone 4 has revealed that it is a great choice for a real estate video tour camera, however certain minor and simple modifications will be necessary.

1) The Iphone 4 will need a wide angle lens.
HDhat.com has tested a very inexpensinve .45x wide angle lens on the Iphone 4 with great success. We will publish the modification method here on TechSavvyAgent.com and our Blog soon.
2) The Iphone 4 will benefit greatly from a simple stabilizer system which will also be quite simple to accommodate.
Neither the wide angle modification or stabilizer will require the Iphone to be modified or touched in anyway.
3) There are also other benefits that derive from the addition of a wide angle lens to the Iphone 4 both in video capture and editing.
For instance the addition of a quality wide angle lens to the Iphone 4 produces a big difference in the contrast ratio, the saturation, white balance and stability. So be sure to watch for our upcoming post titled "How to modify your Iphone 4 with a wide angle lens - a simple, inexpensive modification to dramatically improve your Iphones video capture".

Some important notes about the videos below.
*All the videos below have been "stabilized and smoothed" in the HDhat.com editing process. So the finished product you see here is much smoother than the raw footage from the cameras.
*We did not brighten or tweak the colors in any of the videos during the editing process.
*We did change camera settings on the higher end Sony HX-1 so that we were able to capture nice bright video.
*The Iphone 4 because of its lightweight and small size was the most difficult to capture stable video. A simple stabilizing system will eliminate this and allow for capture that will compare and rival many higher end video cameras.

Some conclusions:
*The Sony HX-1 which is the highest priced of the 3 captured the best and most stable footage.
*The Kodak Zi8 captured considerably darker footage and adjusted to changing light conditions slower than the Iphone and the HX-1
*The addition of a wide angle lens and a simple stabilizing system will allow the Iphone 4 to outperform the Kodak Zi8 and in some cases produce results comparable to much higher end cameras.
NOW LETS GET ON TO THE VIDEOS TO COMPARE.........

Mark,

this is interesting, especially, when you say that  you do not replace the lenses on t he camera. I will be watching for the next blog

I think the one I was most impressed with was the Kodak Zi8...seemed to have richer color than the others.  It definitely was the best quality for outdoors...captured the blue sky while the others washed it out.  Indoors, the Sony footage was brighter, but I think the color detail was better in the Zi8.

I was disappointed in the iPhone footage in the comparisons.  I will be interested to see if any difference once you put a stabilizer and wide angle on it.  I'll stay tuned!  Thanks for posting!

Terri,

The Iphone 4 with a wide angle lens becomes a totally different camera.  I hope to have those samples up next week with instructions on how to put it all together in just minutes for very little $'s.

Mark - Are you going to be using the Owle Bubo?  That looks pretty cool...a little pricey, but offers a lot of options.  Any experience with it?

Owle - Too pricey especially when all you need is a .45x wide angle lens but it does a great job.

What surprised me is the quality of the iPhone 4 image.  Granted, it might be the settings on the other cams, but in the outside scenes, I thought the iPhone had the nicest image.  The Vi8 seems too contrasty, and the HX1, too blown out on the whites (tat may be more to do with the iris being manually opened higher, not the cam itself).  For indoor shots it compared quite favorably.

In the iP4 video, I noticed some weird......I don't know what word to use.....warbling when the camera moves into the dining room.  Is that an iP4 sue, or was it a shaky shot that the stabilizing software couldn't quite fix?

....That should say, "Is that an iP4 ISSUE...."  Not sure where the first 'IS' disappeared to.

In my next blogpost which I will try get up tonite you will notice that the wobbling is gone because I added a stabilizer bar and wide angle lens to the Iphone 4.  The HX-1 can have the exposure dialed up or down and in this video it may have been set a little high but that is largely my preference because just for an example...I have a 3 year old $150 flat screen at home and the Zi8 video is dark on that monitor whereas the HX-1 is reasonable.  So that little brightness thing with the HX-1 is just my preference after sitting in with dozens and dozens of agents and residents and watching our different videos on their monitors which in many cases aren't the bright monitors we use.

Is there a way with video editing software to lighten up dark areas as you cut and get the video ready for YouTube, etc?  It seems to be an issue with the Kodak Zi8 which I own and will soon be ordering your recommended wide angle for it and start learning how to use it.

The sad thing is I also own a JVC HDD Everio which I still haven't put to good use.

Sue, yes it is different with each software but all have a way to brighten up sections.
