Maui real estate left unharmed as hurricane passes

Hurricane Flossie passed by Maui early Wednesday morning with no major harm done.  This hurricane which was a category four on Sunday, veered slightly west as it passed by the islands and diminished in size and stregnth. The Big Island closed their schools and many businesses and opened shelters.  On Tuesday night the hurricane was within eighty miles of South Point, the most southernmost point on the Big Isle, but when passing Maui County it was 160-200 miles to the west.  Maui real estate owners were keeping close tabs on the progress of this storm as many witnessed hurricane Iniki and Ewa in the past two decades.  Kahului winds were gusty to 35 mph on Tuesday with Kapalua reporting 40- 45 mph winds in the afternoon.  a few Kihei power poles were bent sideways, which may have been from the heavy winds.  Hawaii often gets several hurricane watches each year, luckily they usually pass us by with out harming Maui property.

Whew. Last year when we were in Maui a hurricane was coming as well, but turned into a tropical storm and all we noticed was power outage, no cell phones, and a lot of wind. I'm so glad to hear that this one passed you by! Maui is beautiful!

I don't even usually think of hurricanes in connection with Hawaii.  Glad to hear you passed by with nothing.  My niece and her husband are on vacation there right now.  We have made it to Oahu and to Kauii but not yet Maui.  Someday!!!

...so did Maui get any rain from this at all? I was there (mainly S. Kihei) for the first two weeks of July and people from all around the island were commenting about how dry it had been. I know residents were probably not hoping for hurricane-like weather, but maybe a little brush-by of the wet weather? I have heard nothing on this from the news here in the continental US.

Thanks in advance for letting me know!

Ya, we do get hurricanes passing through this area, Maui has fared pretty well the last 35 or more years.  Kauai has been tore up pretty bad twice the the past 25 years.  They had major damage to their real estate that took a number of years to repair both times.

Living in Kihei Maui myself, I was dreaming of rain, it has been so dry, the land is parched.   Of course we didn't want the roofs tore off our homes, but a good rain would have been nice, even a little one,  but no such luck, at my house the weather was a typical beautiful hot sunny day with light breezes.  Not a drop of rain, though a friend in Haiku said it was raining, but that is pretty typical weather for Haiku.
