Wilton, CT - It Takes Work To Have Curb Appeal

When the vines seem to win the battle.     We have bad vines and good vines in Wilton CT.

Bittersweet vines in Wilton CT

The bad vines seem to win all of the battles on the properties that are not cared for - bittersweet, wild rose, grape vines, euonymus vines, and poison ivy seem to grow at every roadside and in all of the deep woods.   The bittersweet vines are popular with those who are creating Christmas wreaths for the front doors, but not popular with those trying to get the seedlings out of their woods.   Same goes for wild rose, grape vines, and of course, poison ivy!    Wild rose at least has redeeming pretty flowers, but - poison ivy has no redeeming value, yet some folks in Wilton CT keep it growing on their properties!  Why don't folks care about their curb appeal?

On the other h
and, within the "nice properties," we have wisteria, climbing hydrangea, and clematis which are "good" vines.    Now, wisteria is a very ancient vine that has been around for many generations.   It is almost a rule that you may not cut it down.    Clematis is a little more temperamental in New England, but gorgeous as the summer progresses, with its purples and pinks.   Climbing hydrangea, on the other hand, is so fragrant and pretty, that it is hard to give away.

Then, there are the honey suckle, loved by all that aren't trying to cultivate a perfect garden, (did we really suck out the nectar as children?) and the Virginia Creeper, which is gorgeous in the fall, hanging bright red all over the trees in Wilton and in New England.  These can help your curb appeal if they are in "color."

I wish I had pictures of all of these, but I do not.   Perhaps you will find them along your roadsides and decide whether they are "good" or "bad?"   Do you think these have curb appeal?

Dagny- when I was kid and my folks were clearning and cleaning their lake lot and we were burning trash/debrie piles I got in the smoke and breathed in poison oak.  I broke out in my mouth, mose and throat.  Worst pain ever. *with the possible exception of my root canal.  So I agree... eradication is in order.  But I love the flowering vines.

Tammy - Why did our parents do that to us?   We lived in PA, and we also burned.  I got poison ivy AND impetigo inside and out everywhere at the same time!   It was awful!

Dagny:  We live in the woods, and it's a constant battle with the poison ivy and grape vines!  They'll choke and kill a tree in a year.  Great post!

Good for you, Julia, for staying on top of it.    I wish everyone did.   It really does bother me to see the damage they do.

Oh, I had so totally forgotten about sucking out the nectar in honeysuckles as a child. I know where there are some large and beautiful honeysuckes here.... Hmmm.... Can I blame it on you? LOL

Wisteria is one of my favorites.  In response to comment #4, I didn't know that inhaled smoke of burning poison ivy could give you sores in your mouth.  Wow that's good to know.

Curb appeal is really important but most folks don't think about it, and may not even realize how it influences them when buying a house. Great post

Tammie - I also love wisteria.  We planted it just off from a porch, and it took over so fast that I decided to admire it from afar on others' properties.....

Yes the burning poison ivy has done in many kids.  I was almost in the hospital from it.   Sores in the mouth, nose, eyes, ears, etc.....

Tina - You are so right!  So many think it's the color of the paint, or cannot even put their finger on a thing - just don't like it ....

Growing up there was always Honeysuckle, we have one in our back yard now for 3 years and the Humming birds love it along with the Butterfly bushes.

Great post, I love how you break down the plants. I would have to say the green thingys there vs the other green things.

I read an article that the honeysuckle attracts the birds that eat the bad bugs like Japanese Beatles.  I run around asking my neighbors if i can kill their poison ivy, etc....so I don't get it in my yard.

Yvette - Why didn't I think of that?  A few of my neighbors have a lot of vines, - and I do occasionally find I wish they would take care of them, - never thought of helping them do it....

Dagny ~ thanks for the interesting lesson on vines.  I never knew there were so many different types.  But I'm not a vine lover, so I try to make sure there aren't any in my yard,

Dawn - I think there are fewer vines in the West, so you probably do not need to worry as much...
