Because there are so many bad computers out there, and the equally as bad people controlling them, we are forced to read words, graphics, and silly squiggly combinations of letter and numbers in order to enter many sites.
Of course there is a name for these security measures. They are called captchas.
CAPTCHA (plural CAPTCHAs)
- A distorted image of letters and numbers used to prevent automated use of websites.
- I find CAPTCHAs very difficult to read.
- (by extension) Anything that a human must do to prove that they are not a computer
Yes indeed when I want to make comments on websites, purchase tickets online, etc., I have to prove that I'm not a computer. I'm not saying this is a bad thing. I agree that security is a very important aspect of any website or platform.
I just find that more and more I am reading the captchas incorrectly and have to refresh it and often more than once to find one that looks legible.
Here on Active Rain the captcha graphics are much easier to read. There are no numbers or squiggly lines, or lower case letters mixed with upper case letters. Have I messed up with Active Rain graphics? Yes, many a time. Why?
Because I transferred the letters incorrectly. Active Rain uses funny little words - well sometimes they aren't little. Sometimes there are two words hyphenated. When I transfer the letters incorrectly, I lose the post I just wrote, or the comment to another member.
My own fault but very frustrating.
Today when I signed on my graphic was a very unusual word. "Duku". Duku? Could it really be a word? I went off to Google and indeed Duku is a fruit.
The Duku fruit can only grow in an ultra tropical climate so I won't be going searching for any trees here in Canada.
