Silly Saturday -How Duku You Do? Have I Captchad Your Attention?

By
Real Estate Agent with RE/MAX Real Estate Centre Inc., Brokerage

Because there are so many bad computers out there, and the equally as bad people controlling them, we are forced to read words, graphics, and silly squiggly combinations of letter and numbers in order to enter many sites.

Of course there is a name for these security measures.  They are called captchas.

CAPTCHA (plural CAPTCHAs)

  1. A distorted image of letters and numbers used to prevent automated use of websites.
I find CAPTCHAs very difficult to read.
  2. (by extension) Anything that a human must do to prove that they are not a computer

Yes indeed when I want to make comments on websites, purchase tickets online, etc., I have to prove that I'm not a computer.  I'm not saying this is a bad thing.  I agree that security is a very important aspect of any website or platform.

I just find that more and more I am reading the captchas incorrectly and have to refresh it and often more than once to find one that looks legible.

Here on Active Rain the captcha graphics are much easier to read.  There are no numbers or squiggly lines, or lower case letters mixed with upper case letters.  Have I messed up with Active Rain graphics?  Yes, many a time.  Why?

Because I transferred the letters incorrectly.  Active Rain uses funny little words - well sometimes they aren't little.  Sometimes there are two words hyphenated.  When I transfer the letters incorrectly, I lose the post I just wrote, or the comment to another member.

My own fault but very frustrating.

Today when I signed on my graphic was a very unusual word.  "Duku".  Duku?  Could it really be a word?  I went off to Google and indeed Duku is a fruit.  Duku fruit

The Duku fruit can only grow in an ultra tropical climate so I won't be going searching for any trees here in Canada.

Jenny, I remember I learned a new kind of fruit from you last time when you wrote a similar post.  I just don't know where AR find these funny words for us.  haha.

Hi Dan, Always happy to provide smiles lol.  And they are free.

Hi Rita, you are right.  I think that post was about the farkleberry??

Hi Andrea - they certainly come up with some unusual sounding fruit.  I'm glad I'm not the only one who has trouble with those darn slanted, squiggly captchas.

As I write these comments, the graphic below says "namnam".  Sounds like one of my kids's first words.

Hi Jenny, This was a good one!    I sometimes have problems with the captchas too, on one particular website the letters were so close I couldn't get it so I asked for the audio version and it was even worse! They must know that a computer would finally get it right by the 3rd try- LOL!

Hi Jenny - Biriba is a new word for me to enter here on ActiveRain.  I have not yet researched what it is or what it means.

If you think you are the only one with these problems, you must have gone Duku.

Jenny-

By the way, I am one upset American.  CBS just started a new show this month:  The Bridge, a Canadian import.  I was hooked.  Now they've cancelled it after two weeks.  The idiots.

Any chance we can get Canada to declare war on The States....and start the bombing by hitting the HQ of CBS.

Hi Jenny,

I did that here too - I typed in the AR captcha and lost the comment. I'm with you that it was my own fault, but at the same time can't help but wonder why we can't have a second shot at typing it in properly without losing what we've typed. But now I just copy everything first.

It's a shame that we've had to resort to using captchas because some people decided to abuse what we have, and again the inconvenience lies with those who don't. *sigh*

Hi Jenny, I enjoyed learning a couple of words today from your post.  It is frustrating how difficult some of those words and numbers are to read on some sites.  At least the AR ones are easy to read.

Hi Mark, I probably should be doing some research that will make me money instead of looking up words from AR but sometimes I get curious.

Hi Jim how could they cancel it after only two weeks?  That's strange.  Maybe you can get it on internet.  Check out which network it ran on in Canada.

Al & Peg, I panic when I'm trying to buy tickets online and only have 2 minutes and have to figure out the stupid words.

Hi Pam, it's too bad comments aren't automatically saved as we write.  Something AR needs to address.  Not sure how changing the leaderboard stuff took priority over fixing this type of problem.

Hi Bruce, you are right.  AR's captchas are legible.  I just can't spell sometimes.

Wanda, I think most of us at AR have felt your pain.  It is so deflating when you have written a lengthy post or comment and lost it all.  Grrr.

Jenny,

I remember how stunned I was when the word that i needed to put there was "zubrovka", which is a popular brand of Russian hard liquor. There were a few others, that puzzled me.
