Creepy CraigsList scam

By
Real Estate Agent with Paragon Real Estate Group

So someone grabbed the data points and photos from my CraigsList ad for my Nob Hill 2BR condo listing and reposted it as an insanely cheap rental. I know this scam-- it's a 'cash for keys deal that started surfacing a month or so ago in the Bay Area.

I found out because these poor people started calling me to ask about the $850/month unit for rent at 900 Bush. It was very confusing until a woman faxed me a copy of the ad (it had already been flagged for removal by the time she tried to send the link). Since I never saw it online, I'm not sure how my name and number was affiliated with it, but the Yahoo! email address for inquiry was defnitely NOT mine.

Here's an old posting about the scam on my Examiner Page from a month ago.

CraigsList scam-- when "cash for keys" is a really bad idea

I emailed the scammer and told him to stop. We'll see if it works. . .

Hello Cece and Vegas Bob hasn't looked for anything on Craigslist for over one year, I stay away from that website and thanks for the tip!

Hi Cece, That is creepy, but fortunate that you caught the scam.  These scams seem to be more prevalent on the free listing sites.

Cece, Craigslist is a cesspool for scammers.  I have heard of that happening too.

Yes, it's an odd, strange phenomenon. And now I'm wondering if a spate of requests for showings on Friday afternoon weren't from agents who saw the ad for the rental and called me because the 'owner' emailed them and said to call me and arrange for a key at the front desk. Some definite research and follow-up is in order!
