Sally - there is actually already a line on shingles, made from the tar glue, and also notches between the small panels, to help align them during installation!  Most DIYers probably look at them and wonder why those cuts are there...

Bill - I actually saw a black and white roof down in the Little El Salvador section of Falls Church, VA.  I will have to check with Billy as to the goop.  Likely not since that already is a product.

Look out Jay. I'm coming out with a simpler counter counter flashing. Lawn edging comes in a roll and you can just nail it on, no sawing needed. Just wack the long end off or let it hang so you know where it is when you need more.
