I found Mark fascinating.  A normal guy, doing a normal job...  As we all have learned in our careers, we have to continue to strive to be better and better.  Every year striving to do more, earn more, and seek more success.  If we become mediocre, then the only direction we to go is down...  So it would seem Mark is always striving to be better.  It seems that there are many people around us that seem to be OK with Mediocrity.  Feeling that they should be rewarded just for time spent on a particular thing.  That unfortunately is not true, as if we do not try to innovate the world will find something better and pass us buy.

So I thought I would post some things that I got out of the interview...  David (the Author), Guy (The NPR radio guy) and Mark (founder of Facebook).

Facebook like the telephone?

Mark was asked about the commonalities of Facebook and the Telephone.  David stated that the telephone has been around for a long time, and that Facebook will not be around as long as the telephone...  As if he was smarter, and more educated then Mark (Grrrrr...).  Mark snapped back with a smile and "ooooooooooh", and said he wasn't sure the telephone would be around in a few years with a laugh.  Mark hopes that Facebook will be around for a long time.  It will continue to grow and adapt.

Facebook's growth?

David again asked another silly question, stating that with Facebook being 500,000,000 users, it is larger than a country...  And if people who fear Facebook, and think if it as a country.  Mark smiled and stated that [FB having 500,000,000 users] that doesn't make it a country.

Most commonly used item on Facebook.

Mark stated that the most interesting thing to people is... other people.  That is the most engaging app online.  People spend more time on Facebook then any other app.  When they started making Facebook, they started building apps around people... the "share photo" was the most used portion of Facebook.

How much time spent on Facebook?

30% of everyone that is on the web is using Facebook.  In addition, 50% of Facebook users, log into it daily.

Games

Games are the biggest users and innovators and one of the first things that took off.  Zynga has created disruption in the gaming industry.  They have 1/8 of the employees of EA (Electronic Arts) with 50% of the value. (Zynga is the maker of Farmville and others)

Someone else becomes the CEO in the future?

He was asked if someone became the CEO of Facebook, and wanted to share all of the personal information that we have store and about people lives...  Mark answered that that would be the stupidest thing they could do.

Facebook is a community of people that are a community staying connected.

Is Facebook a utility?  Should it be regulated?

When asked this question, he stated that Facebook gets regulated by users and we listened carefully about what they say... That influences our decisions...

Competition?

He was asked about open source competitors.  Mark encourages this, and he even donated to one group.

New Facebook books, and movie?

The new movie is a fiction based movie.  He will probably not read it, or watch it.  He did not contribute to it, since it was fiction.  He didn't want to have it state that they spoke with him, in making the movie since it is a fictional piece of work.

Two identities on Facebook and in person?

Two identities is a lack of integrity.  He was asked if he is the same person here as he was with his friends.  And he stated that he was the same awkward person.

Does Apple have any effect on your decisions on the direction of Facebook?  Apple vs. Flash?

He smiled big, and thought for a second before he answered this question.  We do the best we can [in working with Apple].  He also stated that he has an iPhone and a Droid.

Google as a competitor?

Mark stated that Facebook doesn't do the same thing.  That they don't have to lose for Facebook to win, and that Facebook was created so people can stay connected to their friends.

Future of news media

Mark talked about the fact that in the future people would be able to get their news based on what it was they wanted to hear/read/see.  It is the future of media.  Guy snapped back in irritation some comment being negative to the idea that the consumer can control the media as opposed to the reporters controlling the media.  Apparently Guy hasn't realized that the media is declining in its power in the last few years.

I hope you enjoyed the post!  If there is anywhere I need to edit or update or clarify, please let me know!  This was a hard post, since I had to take lots of notes, and retype them.   Let me know what you think!!!!

I enjoyed Diane Sawyer's interview with Mark Zuckerberg--he seemed like a young man more comfortable behind a computer screen than in front of a movie camera.  I liked his humility.

Norma - I noticed that too.  He was just a normal guy, doing a great job.  I think it is unfair all the negativity he is getting.  It doesn't seem deserved...

Chris - Good to know, and Good Evening!. . . You know, every time I say that I get a mental picture with a sound bite from the original Dracula movie. . . Sad, but true! I watched the original Stepford Wives last night so I guess my brain must be stuck in horror film mode. (And yes, I have a thing for old movies . . . just nod, smile and go with it.) ;)
