Didn't Want To Interfere Can Hurt Your Friends and Family

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Envelope Real Estate Brokerage Inc

How many times have your friends or family done something, or were going to do something or thinking about doing something and you didn't want to interfere?

I'm not talking about personal stuff but what about when your friends and family have decided to work with a certain REALTOR® or lawyer or financial adviser and not the professional you worked with in the past and your experience was exemplary and very satisfying?

Last week I received a call from a person whose condo was going to expire because it hadn't sold after being on the market for 120 days and they got my name from a very close friend of theirs who referred me. To be brief, I listed the condo, marketed it at the same price and have a very good offer on it and should close within 30 days! The excited sellers commented to me that they asked their friend why they didn't refer me in the first place and the comment was "We didn't want to interfere. We didn't want to be pushy!"

When I spoke to my past client who did refer me, her comment was" We didn't want to interfere". I thought: "Am I making my past clients and friends aware that I love referrals? " That referrals are a lifeblood of my business?"

I reviewed my sales to date and 86% of my transactions so far this year were referrals so I feel that my asking for referrals and letting people know that I welcome referrals is working most of the time.If you truly are a friend and care about your family and others, you are saving your friends many headaches, heartaches and for sure, a lot of money by referring someone you are happy with. What are they going to do, hit you over the head? If your past experience has been gratifying, share it, not only will your friends and family be happy, so will I!

Well said - I agree. If your family and friends don 't trust you to do a great job for them, how close are they?

Ty,

your posts not only have good content but a great overall look. Well done! By the way, since you are in Canada and I am not, would you mind if I borrowed your "Let us help you find a way home" phrase? I love it.

I think that we often make the mistake of not letting our past clients know that we prefer referrals from the people that have had fabulous experiences with us.  And I agree that it definitely can save their friends and family a lot of frustration in the long run.

People sometimes have a "non-pushy" attitude.  And, there is really nothing to be done about it.  Here, in Minnesota, they have that atttitude....a lot...to the detriment of friends and relatives.  Even if they had a FANTASTIC result from working with us.

But, I always tell my past clients, if you loved our service, the best thing you can do is refer us to your friends and relatives.  And, more often than not, they do.  If they don't right away, it usuallly works out as yours did.  Easier in the beginning, but better late than NEVER!!!

Ty,

Sounds like you need to kick your referral skills into a higher gear. I did a $100 bill with my picture on it saying that I pay for referrals. Just a thought.

Ty,

The essence of success in this business over the long term is referrals.

Suzanne: Yes, in the end this did work out and as you have expressed, non-pushy is a good thing but at times, a little shove here and there can help.

Terry: That is a no no here in Ontario, bird dog fees, etc. and as a person who looks both ways when he crosses the street, flosses every day, helps old and young ladies across the street, as you can see I am a fine upstanding person.

Barrie: I can see the other side of their thoughts as well, I have heard horror stories of friendships lost or hurt because of referring someone who did not work out.

Brian, I agree and I tell all young sales people, for every trade you do could be worth 10 more trades in referrals if you do things right.

Hi Ty,

Referrals are key.

But here's food for thought: If your past client would have referred you sooner, your present client may not have listened - may not have been at a point to listen.

It's all in the timing :)
