Little Timmy's First Swim Meet. Explain what happened would you?

Submersible fun prior to serious racing

Doris: Our family went to our first swim meet last Wednesday evening and it was soooo confusing.

You were there. Can you tell me what was going on? I could hardly find my child or keep track of when he was swimming!

Answerman: I know how you feel Doris. I don’t think my wife and I figured it out until our second season.

concentrate.... swimming is serious business

There are 40 parents running around organizing and executing necessary duties;

all that stuff will take a long time to understand, but the swim meet itself follows the same pattern.

Wednesday evening was what our league calls a developmental meet.

All eligible kids on the team who show up can swim two events.

It was hot ....block the sun would you?

The Chantilly Highlands Dophins have 223 kids this season and you guys on the Franklin Glen Gators have about the same number.

That is what took so long. That’s a lot of swimming and over 300 swimmers to organize and keep track of.

The meet starts with age 6 and under boy’s freestyle followed by 6 and under girl’s freestyle. The age groupings are 6 and under, 8 and under, 9-10, 11-12, 13-14 and 15-18.

The kids have multiple heats of each age group within the stroke starting with the boys, until they are all done.

There can easily be 10 heats of 8 and under girl’s freestyle; you weren’t dreaming. The event order in summer swimming follows a predictable order: Freestyle, backstroke, breast stroke and butterfly.

That's my kid...she is awesome.

We finish with individual medley (25 meters each of butterfly, backstroke, breast stroke, & freestyle; all swum by an individual swimmer) if we have time before 2 am closing time. (Just kidding).

Doris: OK. I guess that helps. But how can I find my son Timmy?

Don't breath quite yet Elizar.

Answerman: The best way Doris is to volunteer as a team area parent or clerk of course. Timmy should be camped out in the team area between events. If you are working crowd control in there you can keep an eye on him and know where he is, what he is doing to others and when he is swimming.

If you learn the “clerk of course” job, you will be lining up all the kids  for their events. You will be the best informed person on the deck regarding who is where, since you control it!

You will also learn a ton of behind the scenes stuff since the people who head up that group know everything and everybody.

The Answerman starting things

Tom: Was it wrong of me to pray that the meet would be canceled due to thunderstorms since it was so hot and I wanted to watch TV instead?

Answerman: Yes Tom it is very wrong. That is just not the perky attitude one should have now is it?

It's sounds a lot like trying to keep track of your kid on a high school football team with 100 players all wearing helmets.

I'd be praying for thunderstorms too.

Nice new profile pic!

Exactly Jenna,

I cannot follow a whose who in a high school football game to save my life. Thanks on the photo..however...

more weight, more wrinkles, more gray hair and more bags under eyes. I will see if my daughters can photo shop that all out?

Well, I would need a stiff drink just to get started.  And I am talking about sitting in the stands and watching!

Tony and Darcy,

Yes it sounds terrible but it is amazingly organized :-)....and swim meets are happening like this all over the country. This is our 18th year of involvement. We are scaling back now that our children have graduated.

Bill,

Let me tell you...when it is 9 pm and still 95 degrees and you have been standing up for three hours, the contents of the fridge back home start calling your name.

I WISH I could have seen this 8 years ago....Our oldest son joined the High School swim team when he became disillusioned with the High School baseball program.  He LOVES swim!  He is still a Life Guard as a senior in College.  Meets can be chaos, but I will attest that it was a great experience for him, and for us!

Al at Ocean,

Great memories.....but lots of meals and homework in the car. It is tailing off for us know, but looking back I do not know how we did it. We averaged 10 hours per week on swimming alone then ad in soccer and softball...and Oh yeah, gotta make a living too.

John,

Last year was our youngest daughter's final year of swimming. Our oldest one still coaches after work, but the youngest is happy not to be in the water. She said, "Dad, I have been swimming competitively year round since I was 6 years old. I've had enough for now" That is cool with me...I still officiate occasionally and am on call.
