Wikipedia.org is a free encyclopedia to which anyone can login to edit or add articles and content. We have talked in our private client forums about the fact that Wikipedia is seen as a trusted source from Google. We have also found it to be a good place to mine for community websites from which you can request a link. Quality backlinks are extremely important to the success of your website on Google and other search engines. Other directories that are trusted with Google are Dmoz.org and Yahoo.com. Searching through your particular community within these directories is a great place to find websites to network and advertise with.

Align Yourself with Trusted Friends

In addition to searching Wikipedia, Dmoz, and Yahoo for quality links, you may also want to be in their websites as well.  Yahoo’s directory costs $299 a year to be reviewed and included.  This is a key directory link worth paying for.  Dmoz has an ‘Suggest a Site' button at the top of every category and is free. You will want to drill down to your local community and real estate category to submit your site. It is a volunteer community so getting your link approved is not guaranteed.

Getting your link on Wikipedia.org is another story.  Wikipedia is run by the community-at-large so it is very self-regulating. Any content submitted that someone deems inappropriate or promotional will be notated and removed. Having a link on Wikipedia can be valuable so it is worth it to explore the options on how you can include yourself in their website.

How Valuable Is a Trusted Link?

One of our Premium Marketing Package clients has been working with their Marketing Specialist to achieve better rankings. They have a relatively new domain name that was registered in August of 2005. They came to Advanced Access in March of 2006 and signed up for the Premium Marketing Service in July.  One of the backlinks they were recently able to acquire was a link from Wikipedia under their main city of business.  Their city is medium sized and on the outskirts of the state’s capital. The page on Wikipedia is showing a PageRank of 3 on Google’s toolbar.  Via Yahoo’s Keyword Selector Tools, the search term receives approx 10,000 searches a month. Due to the self-editing nature of Wikipedia, I am refraining from listing where this client resides in as it is possible that the link could disappear. :-)

The link was added to Wikipedia.org on October 16, 2006 along with local community content, subdivision, and neighborhood information.

The site was nowhere to be found in Google for the first two months (July & August) of their Marketing Package for their main ‘City Real Estate’ keyword.  In September, they popped up to #105.  They continued to fluctuate between #97, #103, & #105 positions during the early part of October.

On October 27, 2006, a week and a half after the Wikipedia link as added, the site jumped up 30+ spots to #67 for ‘City Real Estate’ which is the main keyword their website is focused on.  As a new site that does not have 'age' this is extremely promising. Today, the keyword is bouncing between #67 and #72.

Is this jump in rankings due to the link in Wikipedia? Or due to the rest of the link building and other SEO aspects our Marketing Specialists have been performing with the client?  It’s hard to tell.  RustyBrick from SERoundTable reported a discussion from Webmaster World that asked how long on average it would take for Google to find quality links and adjust your rankings accordingly. Some members reported that they would see changes in as little as a week.  For trusted sites, Google will generally spider them more often, finding new content added, and taking that into account.  As RustyBrick said, “You get links from trustworthy sites, you become more trustworthy yourself.”

Being seen as a trusted site to the search engines is something to strive for. Your first goal is to make your website a resource for consumers to learn from. Other trusted or authoritative links can be found on our Quality Inbound Links page.

Thanks for the post AA.  wikipedia can be tough to get into.  I've tried to list agents before in wikipedia with little success.  Unless you are rich or famous, it's difficult to get a personal profile to "stick" in wikipedia, but it can be done if it's written properly, and useful to the wiki index.

Interesting case study.  I have not yet explored Wikipedia as a source for backlinks.  I am interested in learning more about how a site's age figures into its Google ranking.  Also, I am curious as to how I can rank so well in Google, and barely show up in either MSN or Yahoo for the same terms.

Kristina, I appreciate the update and the value of the wiki link would be hard to determine but if it is a trusted site then that has to be worth something.

Often overlooked in SEO is the concept of "Trust Rank", it's probably just as important or even more important than the concept of PR in Google today (and isn't display on a toolbar).

There are certain sites that have a high trust rank (human reviewed) so the links from them pass a lot more than another site regardless of that little green PR bar everyone obsesses over.  It's obvious sites like dmoz, yahoo directory and wikipedia are included in this list of highly trusted sites.  Links from these sites, though hard to acquire are invaluable to ranking well in search engines.

Interestingly enough despite the SEO work that had gone into ActiveRain we had failed to submit to many of the trusted, human edited directories such as the Yahoo.  We fixed that this weekend and picked up quite a few links from highly trusted sites.  It will be interesting to see if there is an effect on our ranking in a few weeks.

As a couple notes in trying to determine if a site may be trusted more than others some big factors are.

1. Age, sites that have been around a lot longer are more likely to be trusted.

2. The quality of sites the site is linking to.  If it's linking to junk sites, it's unlikely to be very trusted.

3. Look for sites that don't have any site wide links.  These are often advertising/affiliates and there is a lot of evidence to suggest that Google algorithm see's this and will trust the site less.

4. Basically use common sense, if the site looks trustworthy to you, there is a good chance it will to google.

Matt - Great advice :) Keep us updated on your traffic.

Stefan - There are quite a bit of factors that go into high placement.  I took a quick peek at your website and it looks great. You need to make sure everything is refined and going after your main keywords and good linkage through your website. The top of your site has your keywords but the smaller ones are linking out to other websites. That is telling Google that those websites (the first links found on your site) may be more important than the rest of your pages. Maybe they are! They are to your other neighboring sites. Your meta title tag can be refined as well.  I haven't checked out your inbound links but certainly thinking about trusted sites, making sure you are affiliating yourself with them would be a great idea.  Hope that gives you a little to think about. Your main keyword is very competitive so you need to get competitive as well!

The AboutUs.org was the first I knew of using a wiki to establish a trusted link (if even AboutUs.org is even on that list) and I would think it would be hard for a company, like BarnettAssociates, to get listed. Definetly worth a shot.

I just searched Washington Real Estate on Wikipedia and I found tons of local real estate sites, hmmm, now i need to figure out how I can leverage this information :) Another project, horray :)

Toby, I don't think AboutUs.org is a trusted link. It looks like they are simply using wiki software. Looking at when the domain name was registered, it looks like it is a very new site.
