Warning! Read Your Phone Bill Before You Pay it!

Services for Real Estate Pros with Marte Cliff Copywriting

This month our phone service was switched from Verizon to Frontier, although that may have nothing to do with what happened...

When I opened our first bill from the new provider it was about $15 more than my normal bill, so I went looking to see why. And I found a charge from a company called Email Bundle. Why?

There was a notice - for billing questions call 888-934-7750 to reach PayOne Billing, so I did. I got a recording that told me everyone was busy and that I needed to wait. Then I got a brief busy signal and a message saying I was being transferred... and then a "looped" recording telling me a web address over and over and over.

Obviously, PayOne billing was not going to answer my call.

So I called Frontier. After 10 minutes or so of recorded messages I finally made contact with a live person... who said I just wouldn't believe how many people had called this week over the same issue.

But it wasn't a Frontier issue at all. She said I had been "slammed."

Apparently, third party providers can simply send their bill through your phone company - giving you the convenience of making one payment rather than several.

But in this case, the third party provider is bogus. I have no idea if the bogus company is Email Bundle, who is sending charges via PayOne billing... or if PayOne billing is bogus and the Email Bundle name is fictitious. But tomorrow I'm going to try to figure out where to report it.

The lady I talked with removed the charge from my bill and put "Bill block" on my phone numbers, so it isn't going to happen again. But I thought of all the people who simply get their bill and pay it without looking it over carefully, and it occurred to me that these crooks are probably making a bundle of money.

My bill is the same every month because I pay a flat for unlimited long distance. But other people have long distance charges and their bill is different each month. They might not notice a $15 discrepancy - especially if they're running a business and have large phone bills. And especially not since phone bills are generally so convoluted that it takes a puzzle expert to figure them out.

So that's my message for the day... read your phone bill before you pay it. And if you don't want "Third party providers" to add charges to your phone bill without your permission, call the phone company and tell them to add "Bill block" to your account.

I Googled this company and found other people had registered complaints many months ago. Looks like they just keep trying numbers and finding new victims. When people complain they say "You authorized this..."

I sent them an email through their website... wonder if they'll write back and say I ordered their service. That would be pretty silly, since I use a satellite connection.

It IS a shame that we have to be constantly on the alert for crooks.

Hi Tim... When she said that word I thought it sounded familiar. I wonder if it happend to us years ago when I had the real estate office. If so, my secretary probably made the calls to get it straightened out.

This was annoying, but wasn't a problem aside from wasting some of my time. The lady at the phone company didn't question me at all - probably because she'd already had so many complaints about this company.

Marte,

At least you caught it early. Not a few months down the road. Thanks for letting us know about it also.

Thank you Marti, for bringing this to our attention. I logged on to pay Verizon yesterday and was switched to Frontier. I pay online, but when I get the hard copy bill I will take a closer look at it.

Glad to sound the warning - I don't think these creeps deserve your money any more than mine. And I agree... the slammer is where they belong!

I wondered if this happened because of the transfer to Frontier, but checked with my neighbors and they didn't get slammed.

Now I wonder if it's because my phone number is so readily available on my website - and other websites.

Marte....Thanks for the information.  I haven't heard much about slamming lately, but obviously it still goes on.  Just proves that you can never be too careful.

Right - we need to really read all our bills, and keep track of our bank accounts.

Friends of mine had their debit card charged for several $300 transactions at a WalMart in North Dakota. All the transactions were within a few seconds of each other... and they've never even been to North Dakota! Had they not caught it quickly, the checks they wrote to pay bills would have bounced!

A sad thing that so many want to "earn" their income by cheating others. But... maybe they just think that if the big banks can do it, it's OK for them to do it too!

Thanks for the eye-opener! Why should we have to "opt out" of having scammers bill us for non-existent services, though???

Laura - you are so right. We should not have to opt out of being scammed! But, since we do, I'm glad we can.

Unfortunately, there seem to be a lot of people in our country right now who have no conscience. And yes, sometimes we can be too trusting. But maybe that's a good thing - it shows that we don't think like they do!

Marte, great warning, sadly all bills need to be looked at we noticed that our Electric Bill skyrocketed and we used less compared to last year....just a small example. Bankstatement had a charge on which we did not make...I could go on and on, I am so glad Diane looks at the bills, all it does is anoy me:))

Right - We need to pay attention.

Since he's been retired, my good friend's husband has developed a habit of checking their bank records every day to see what checks have come in, etc.

It really annoyed her until he discovered that someone had put three $300 debits through at a Wal Mart in North Dakota. (We're in Idaho.) Because he was paying attention they were able to deal with it quickly.

Now the bank says it wasn't identity theft - it was "Just a mistake." Some mistake!

It is just wrong that these companies can send in bills with no proof of service and use our phone as a way to get to us. They should have to send the bill just like everyone else, they just found a loophole and if you read a lot of their fine print if you pay even one bill you are now on the hook for an entire year.

That's good to know! I didn't pay it, but called and got it removed from my phone bill.

Then I emailed the company and they wrote back and said they would send me a refund and my service "was now disconnected."

What service?

I really need to make some time to report this to the FTC.

Call a Marana neighbor, I'm THERE!

Nice advice!  My daughter got a TEXT message saying a internet bundle was being added to her account, and she promptly called the phone company, because she knew I already had family packs on the phone.  They deducted right away.  It is AMAZING what spammers can do!

I guess it was nice that she got fair warning so she could stop it before it started, but think how many people might have ignored that message. If there was "fine print" it probably said that not protesting was the same as accepting.

It's ridiculous that we should have to tell the phone company not to add 3rd party billings to our accounts. Will they soon be adding charges to our credit card bills without our permission?
