The Wild Horses of Shackleford Banks, North Carolina
Shackleford Banks is one of many little islands that make up the Outer Banks of North Carolina. While visiting Shackleford Banks, you may feel like you are sitting on a little slice of heaven. Surrounded by water, sea oats blowing in the gentle breeze, your toes in the sand and the beautiful Wild Horses casually strolling around you on the beach...Life is Good! The horses may look like colts due to there size, but they are full grown. They have been here since the 16th century when their Spanish Ancestors made Shackleford Banks their home. Fortunately for all of us who love the area so much, the beautiful, small horses remain and are a favorite to visitors and locals of the Outer Banks of North Carolina.
If you have a boat, you will most certainly want to visit Shackleford Banks. There are also tours and boat rentals available from Morehead City, Atlantic Beach, Beaufort and Harkers Island.
Pack a lunch and lots of water, bring a blanket and plan on staying for a while. Once you get there, you may not want to leave. Shackleford Banks, North Carolina is full of Treasures too, you never know what you may find...sand dollars, clam shells, conch, or maybe just a little peace & quiet! Oh...and make sure you do not forget your Camera!!!
While visiting Shackleford Banks, please remember that the Horses call the island home. While they are beautiful and more than happy to share their home with us, they are wild and should be treated with respect and caution. Do not feed the horses, do not get too close and remember to take your trash with you when you leave.
Help us protect them for all to enjoy their beauty!
