Breaking news hot off the press: Better times appear to be here!

During the past 12-18 months, San Diego County has been receiving consistently good news about the real estate market and the general economy here.

I figure that since we were one of the first markets to go south, it's only fair that we are one of the first, if not the first, to turn around and go north.

Along with home sales consistently rising for the past 27 months and home prices consistently rising for the past 17 months, unemployment has been falling, and the consumer confidence index has been rising.

Breaking news hot off the press this morning tells us that new car sales in San Diego County jumped 30 percent in the first half of 2010, and sales of light trucks rose 18 percent. New cars and trucks are not what people buy when they are unemployed, downtrodden, or fearful of the future. They repair their old cars and trucks, being more diligent in doing standard maintenance like changing the oil and rotating the tires. They wait for better times to buy new vehicles. Well, better times appear to be here!

Also hot off the press this morning we find that the number of housing permits in San Diego County rose to their highest level in two years — up 28 percent over the first half of 2009, June 2010 was up 63 percent over June 2009, and June 2010 was up 27 percent over May 2010. New houses are not what people build when they are unemployed, downtrodden, or fearful of the future. They renovate instead, and developers sit out, waiting for better times. Well, better times appear to be here!
