As a full time Chandler, Arizona resident, I'm often asked "how can you stand the heat here in the Summer?" This question is most often asked by someone from a cooler climate who is looking for a winter home.
The answer is really quite simple. You stay inside as much as you can.
Our active outdoor season runs from about October - June. Close to a full 9 months. But in July - September we hibernate if we can.
Of course if you do have to travel outside of your home, you keep oven mitts in your car to protect your hands from the steering wheel and then you move as quickly as possible from your car into air conditioned spaces.
You also scope out every parking lot for a shady spot and try to limit your driving around to as early or late in the day as possible.
You plan your vacations to places that have rain...because that's something we dream about here.
As a Real Estate Agent, showing homes is a challenge during the summer months here in Arizona...especially if the home has no power...which means no air conditioning. But the same is true during the winter months in the snow belt where temps plummet to below zero (not counting windchill) AND you have to add the winter road conditions. At least we're not shovelling sunshine here.
Truthfully, though...the heat is no big deal if you approach it wisely and stay hydrated. I mean, if you live in a place that has snow in the winter, my guess is you're not having picnics on your patio in January.
