Nun

I see agents around me make mistakes with contracts all the time and dealing with people.

We all make mistakes in life. In general they are ok. Not that we want to make mistakes, particularly devastating, earth shattering mistakes but they are the exception rather than the rule.

Most mistakes are minor, somewhat annoying and we move on. Or do we?

Mistakes Can Be OK But Lessons Need To Be Learned.

That is where most people fall down. They DON'T GET the lesson from their mistake. In other words, don't do that again!! Like missing a question on a test early on in training and then NOT missing that question on the FINAL EXAM again. It may be an oversight in your growth that you tripped up the FIRST time. But don't make the mistake AGAIN.

It's your life to trip and stumble as much as you need or as slow as it takes for you to GET THE LESSON. It really is all up to your awareness and REALIZING you had gone astray. Do what is right and don't make the mistake the SECOND time.

Don't make me send Sister Mary Francis after you with her ruler!!!  LOL.

Gary, I didn't go to parochial school, but I heard about Sister Mary Francis and believe me I LEARN from my mistakes!  LOL!  ~ Susan

Great lesson here Larry! I agree that it's not really truly a mistake if you learn from it, it's simply a learning experience.

Hi Gary I might need to borrow Sister Mary Francis at my office.  Real Estate is know different then growing up.  We've got to make our own mistakes and learn from them.  Nice post.

Gary - such a simple concept but so often not one paid attention to. I think you have to acknowledge that making mistakes is part of being human, but more importantly that we learn from them.

Obviously some mistakes are much more serious andone hopes to never make them. You also can't chastise yourself too much over making a mistake, but it's important to own up to it and apologize if it's that type of situation.

Making mistakes is essential to learning - and that's why it's so important to let our kids make those mistakes instead of protecting them (unless of course, it's something serious.)

I agree - mistakes are inevitable, but growing and evolving as a result is a choice we should all make!

Aw come on... let me keep stumbling... it helps keep my leg muscles in shape.  And you tell Sister Mary to keep her ruler to herself!!!

One needs to insure mistakes are not really a competency thing.  I would say most agents are fined, have their licenses suspended or revoked because of competency.

We like to call that ruler the "Persuader" it's mere presence could correct most oversights!

I know exactly what you mean. It stinks when I make a mistake. It usually cost me something but when I do, I better be sure I learnt something.

Hi Gary, Sister Mary Francis reminds of a teacher I had in elementary school. She was so strict. But she became  a neighbor and I ended moving her lawn over the summer months. We became friends and from then on, I came to realize the value of her disciplinary ways. It wasn't that she was mean, but she used the intimidation to stress that we had to tow the line and it motivated us to give our best. Once you learn that,  it changes the way you approach other things. Then you can rely on your own self discipline to accomplish whatever you want out of life. A great message you have shared here. We all make mistakes but with self dicipline we can also learn and make way less of them.

Gary,

I tolerate mistakes as long as they are admitted instantly and corrected! I have to! Brenda allows me two a month. I've got a decade's worth saved up. I've got to be understanding because I've got 1,440 just waiting to slip out!

Just don't hurt my clients, it could be your last mistake. In the mortgage business the most common mistake is miss quoting a rate. Bill's Rulesput commissions in fourth place, I'll share with my LO's down to nothing after that they need to dig.

There is a great difference between a mistake and incompetence! I have little tolerance for incompetents! Get help before you hurt someone.

Nice reminder - Sister Mary Francis caught my attention.  Made me think of the old Blues Brother's Movie and "The Penguin" and her "whacking" ruler.  YOWCH!!  Mistakes should be painful reminders to LEARN!

Is this a woman?  hehe.  Success is born out our failure and the lessons we learn, so true.  The most successful people also have the most failures because they are willing to keep trying until they succeed. Thanks for the reminder today

I love how you inject humor into a really serious post Gary.  Well done.  We really must learn from our mistakes because so much is riding on it!  Not to mention a potential law suite, serious problems, and even loss of our license.  Now about this Sister Mary Francis...

These are GREAT comments. I swear I write blogs to read the comments of people far greater geniuses than me. There are Sister Mary Francis teachers out there for sure and thank God some teachers do have those high expectations for us cause indeed they do make us all better people. If you look at people big time floundering they are JUST NOT learning the lesson. The universe has a way of getting you stuck in spots sometimes until you do figure it out and learn the lesson and MOVE ON.

Some fo the greatest lessons learned anywhere, we learned because of a mistake. As long as we learn from them and don't repeat them, it isn't so bad!~

Hi Gary, When in unfamiliar water it's always a good idea to ask for help before we make a mistake.  But try as we might, humans make mistakes all the time - I think your message is clear to not repeat the same ones over and over.  Love the visual, brings back bad memories though :-)

When we fall down we need to fall forward, pick ourselves up and more on.

Good luck and success.

I had a first grade teacher that would whack you with a ruler if you missed a word during the reading lesson....  not  a fond memory.

There's no reason to end up in the same mistake place again and again... means we didn't learn the lesson.

No one is perfect and this is definitely a business where we learn every day!  Your illustration made me smile, and you point was spot-on.

Gary, I think my broker is Sister Mary Francis.  But, seriously, he keeps me on the straight and narrow.  He doesn't have to look over my contracts, but sometimes he has to keep me focused on the goal and not get sidetracked by details that are germane to the issues.  Thanks.

Mistakes are inevitable and hopefully I don't require the old, wooden ruler to make me humble enough to see what I should have learned...  Nice post Gary.

Very True, my friend!

I was just talking about this very subject with friends!

We decided it is even smarter if we learn from the mistakes others make!

God Bless!

I think I go too far the other way.  I've learned some lessons the hard way that make me too cautious when it comes to just getting out there and selling real estate.  I see the potential pitfalls and am terrified of making a mistake.

Dr. Phil has a great line about having to do an autopsy on past failure before you can go on to succeed.  If you don't know what you did wrong you are likely to repeat the mistage when you try again.
