Ice CreamAs kids we all use to 'chant'....'Ice Cream, Ice Cream, we all yell for Ice Cream'....we use to be able to go to the corner drug store and buy an ice cream cone (1 scoop) for a nickle and a double scoop for 10cents!

Then there was the 'Good Humor' truck....are those even still around?  For those too young to remember these were trucks LOADED with ice cream in all different assortments and sizes.  What fun to listen for the music and stop whatever we were doing to get to the curb before the truck went past.  The man would jump out of his truck and meet us at the back and open the door to a HUGE assortment of goodies to choose from!  more ice creamIt was always mid-to-late afternoon when the truck would arrive and mom would stand at the door and tell us 'now only one so you don't ruin your supper!'

Have you noticed how much ice cream has gone down lately?  No, not in price but in size?  Well, price is affected.  I bought the Dreyers 'half gallon' in the grocery store the other day for $5.69.  Only to get home and discover it's no longer a half gallon....it's 1.75 quarts!  I'm game for paying $5 a half-gallon...I know that today $5 is worth the same amount as a 5cents was in the 'old days'.  I feel though that the 'downsizing' of packaging is just a way of trying to pull the wool over the consumer's eyes.  This was done with coffee several years ago, I had not seen it since...until I noticed this on the ice cream packaging.  (The Anderson ice cream is one I had in the freezer and says 2 gallons, I'm curious to see if they 'downsized' also.)

Mary, I think of it as a blessing in disguise. I am an ice cream fanatic! Dad used to go to the big dairy in the valley and by the humongous tubs they put in ice cream parlors!!! (We had a big family... but still!!!) And I SO remember singing the "I scream - You Scream" song!

I make mine homemade.  I do a double batch which costs me about the same as buying it, I get to choose my own flavors (not available in stores!) and it tastes WAYYY better!

Ice Cream is not the only thing at the grocery store going down in size.  It seems like half of what I buy is now in a smaller package but priced the same as what the bigger package use to cost.  Potatoe chips being an example.

I remember when a pound of coffee was actually 16 ozs.  The price is up and the quanity is down (12 oz)

I bought a pack of hotdogs with 8 dogs in the pack instead of the standard 10 for full price.  Upon further looking, alot of the HD companies have done so as well, but no price reduction.  This one took me a long time to figure out, then I dropped a couple in the grill and was two dogs short, instead of two buns extra!  Sneaky!

Mary-  Having invested way too many years in retail grocery, I can tell you that nearly EVERYTHING now comes in a different sized package, usually smaller... but not always.  Sometimes the manufacturer makes it bigger (like a valu-pak) and changes the pricing to confuse you into paying more.  Every month or two, the major grocery stores have to "reset" their shelves and aisles to accomodate new sizes of packaging on hundreds of items!  Ignorance is bliss...  you've only noticed the coffee and ice cream!!  LOL!
