I once asked a client about his pay off and he gave me a figure and we found out after the contract that he was quite off.  Now I ask to actually see... a statement or a printout from on line.  That client had to pay money at closing... simply because he didn't know what his payoff actually was.  It's important to ask the right questions.

Sometimes with the loan number though you need the last four digits of their social security number as well. Make sure you get that too.
