In the charm filled Village of Croton on Hudson, NY, 30 miles North of NYC and along the Hudson River is a place with natural beauty and a history dating back to the early 1600's. The history of Croton on Hudson and its community dates back to the 17th century when Hendrick Hudson sailed along the Hudson River and anchored his ship, where he met and traded with the Kitchawanic Indians who called this area Senasqua.  When Dutch settlers signed a peace treaty with the local Kitchawanc Indians, this set in motion an unfolding of events into the 19th century where growth continued and multiplied with the building of the railroad, the Croton Dam, and the aqueduct that brought many immigrants to the area and population swelled.  In 1898 the Village became incorporated, and became a place of interest for artists, writers and musicians. To this day it attracts many artistic types and an array of diverse people.

There are many exceptional areas within Croton. One particular neighborhood with unique homes and   winding quiet, tree-lined streets called The Trails by some or Mount Airy by others, (some old timers call it Red Hill),  offers eclectic homes and a history that includes the American authors Max Eastman, and John Reed. Other left leaning and Socialist journalists, artists, writers and enthusiasts moved to the area from Greenwich Village and allegedly had secret meetings in various homes.  In this period of time, many bohemian and nonconformists began building summer homes, as well as buying cottages and old farm buildings on and around this area off Mount Airy Road.  The early 1900s in Croton was enlivened but these left leaning intellectuals, as well as other well known people that includes Isadora Duncan, Joseph Freeman, Gloria Swanson and Upton Sinclair. There are many noteworthy people in the area to this day; today I closed on a home of the recently passed illustrator and painter, Richard Merkin, who was inspired by the 20s and 30s, lived on Mount Airy Road in an expanded cottage with lovely grounds and a dipping pool.

Mount Airy has such a wide range of homes starting at 400K for a small cottage going up to several million plus. Many of the historic homes have Hudson River views from Stone Manor homes; Normandy Tudor's that have nurtured generations to roomy cottages with perennial gardens with moss covered stone steps.

Oh, yes, super cool historic area.  Earlier in the year we worked on a whole home there that someone bought (sanded & refinished 3 floors).  The home was old - I think 1,700's - definitely before the constitution. New homeowner loved it for it's charm.  Had old pine floors - so much character.  I'll need to see if we can dig up some before/after picts.

Oh, and I think this was right near lots of lakes - beautiful drive.
