Country home fly misery

Real Estate Broker/Owner with Hudson Valley Homes and Land

If you own a vacation home, country home, or home in the suburbs near a farm, you are likely dealing with the usual annoyance of flies.  Flies, in my opinion are one of nature's most obnoxious creatures and seem to have been created for the sole purpose of annoying humans and spreading filth.  So what to do?  It is the height of the Summer and the flies are at their worst.

In the old days a simple fly swatter would do, but this being the 21st century, of course there are many hi-tech ways of ridding our beautiful country properties of flies.  My favorite one is what I call the "carrion bag".  You can get it in any hardware store, Lowes or Home Depot.  Otherwise known as a fly trap or hotel, (flies check in but they don't check out), it is a plastic bag that you fill with about a cup of water.  The water activates a chemical that smells frankly, like er, eh, something very dead.  After about a day, the flies flock and get into the bag and can't fly out.  I especially love this method because I get to have the disgustingly sinister pleasure of being able to watch them flying around in this bag and eventually meet their tiny, awful deaths floating in this horribly stinky mixture that has attracted them.

I put my most recent bag out a few days ago and I must have hundreds in there now.  Yes, August is indeed the month for enjoying my country home in beautiful New Paltz, New York.  It is also fly season.  May the best woman win!

I really didn't realize that there were so many options to deal with flies. We live on acreage and find that a fly swatter works great. I have greater problems with other insects.

It really is amazing how this bag works.  I live next door to a horse farm.  I also raise honey bees.  Only the flies go to this bag.  I still have yellow jackets and mosquitoes, but hey, it's better than living in the city!  How's the REO business going out your way?  I specialize in REOs too!
