There is too much space when there's a door that always stays closed.

I recently moved to a new office and realized that I needed to bring my supplies in. I have a closet with all of the paper goods and supplies that one could find at Office Max or Office Depot collected over the years-so I went shopping in the closet. Had to climb over the accumulated "stuff" in that room to get to the closet to fill up the Christmas bag with all of my organizational goodies. Pretty hanging folders and such. As I sifted through shelves of supplies I had systems scanning/rolling through my head-15 Blue folders for new Listings 10 red ones for Projects and manila folders to match.

That room behind me kept creeping around the corners of my good system plans in my head. Why do we have a room or a closet that is "that room" the one where things collect? I had climbed over red and green tubs full of Chistmas lights and ornaments-hence the bag for my goodies. This is a room that I venture into rarely. It is all the way at the top back of the stairs and now that most of the kids are grown-I may climb those stairs once every other week to check the bathrooms and tidy up. The door is usually closed and like the other places in our lives that don't get attention we just don't take the time to open the door and really look at the state of the room behind that door. Unless there was company coming I might not visit it for months at a time and now I know that next Christmas when I am looking for the lights and ornaments in the attic I will be confused when I don't find them-they never were put away.

Strange how old habits are slipping these days-we are too busy just living life to pay as much attention to those things. Perhaps that is good-perhaps not? Today I would rather take the youngest daughter to the pool or out to a movie than worry about the state of that room behind that door. She has many smiles on her face and perhaps just letting it be for another day won't really hurt after all there's the door and no one needing the space at the moment. Could this be why Spring and Fall cleaning were invented? The Grands understood that sometimes people are more important than what lies behind the closed doors? I have to admit I took a couple of minutes to just look in a box in that room and found some old favorite books that are now in my office library. Like old friends who come to visit I gave them a position of honor where I can just reach out and visit with them once in awhile. Feels kind of good-Perhaps I'll just look forward to a cooler fall day when I might open that door again and spend some time tucking things away where they belong. For now they will belong-behind the door at the top of the stairs. I'm Ok with that. ; )
