In the summertime while boating we need to watch for changing weather patterns by paying attention to wind changes and cloud formations. As we all know summer storms can materialize quickly, and without warning.
Any thunderstorm is dangerous to be caught out in on the lake because they contain lighting. If you are in a boat out in the open water, you are at risk because you all the tallest object out in a large open space. When you notice that the weather is changing while you are on the lake, put on a life jacket and head for the closest shelter.
If you get caught in the storm, and have to ride it out, squat down as low as you can go. Make sure you keep the bow of the boat into the wind. In order not hit a wave head on, and make sure you travel at a 45 degree angle.
