Be Careful of the Sun!

By
Real Estate Agent with SHAHAR Management

With one of the hottest summers in years it is easy to forget that you can very easily get sun debra walsh real estatepoisoning, an extreme sunburn or even heat exhaustion.   Any one of the 3 can be extremely dangerous.  Thousands every year are hospitalized for heat related illnesses and hundreds will die from them.

HEAT EXHAUSTION

This is caused after exposure to high temperatures with high humidity and usually strenuous physical activity.  With dehydration, without proper treatment this can lead to heatstroke which is a life-threatening condition.  Heat exhaustion is preventable by keeping yourself hydrated.  Symptoms include headache, chills, pale skin, weak pulse and cool skin.

SUNBURN

This is caused by prolonged exposure to the sun or tanning bed with little or no sunblock.  Sunburn can be extremely painful and should be treated with cool cloths, lotions containing aloe vera, or topical steroids to the affected areas.  Lotions and creams may be refrigerated to help in the soothing process.  Sunburns may cause fevers and headaches due to the dehydration so rehydrating yourself may help greatly.  Remember that you never use sunblock with a tanning bed.

SUN POISONING

This is caused by excessive exposure to the sun or a tanning bed after you have already received a sunburn.  The skin is usually extremely red or darker with possibly blisters that could become infected.  Symptoms included headache, fever, chills, nausea, rapid pulse, extreme fatigue and possibly dizziness.   If you believe you may have sun poisoning call your doctor.

With summer going full blast make sure to protect your skin!

Great advice Deborah.  It is always fun to be out in the sun but precautions are necessary (especially with the little ones).  We have had a much cooler summer than normal here in the East Bay. ~ Doug

Hi Debra,

Thank you for that very wise advice...although as I sit here watching the rain come down I don't think it'll be a problem today!!

Debra I have long been aware of the suns damage to skin, as a matter of fact, I didn't get too much sun in my lifetime.  Maybe because I was so busy doing other things it never was a prioity.  That changed though and now I'm getting my suns worth and doing it a little at a time.  Nice blog for keeping others informed.

Howdy and evening to you Debra

Debra, this sure is a blog post folks should read. A couple of thing that can help folks with Heat Exhaustion, drink a class of luke-warm water with a bit of salt mixed in it. And when you are feeling real hot run cold water over your wrists, by doing so. It will cool you down.

Have a good one

Debra, very good advise.  Too much sun is quite damaging, there are immediate effects and then there are those that won't surface until many years to come.  It's easy to misjudge the power of the sun, when it comes to sunning, less is more!

Debra - I never used to wear sun screen but after having 2 basel cell carcinomas surgically removed, I now pay attention.

Debra.....Having fun in the sun often causes us to fail to protect our skin.  The chilled lotion for enhanced soothing is a great idea.

Good advice Debra. I was volunteering at a carnival booth today and there was direct sunlight on me- even though it was after 5pm it was a bit much.

I've never heard of sun poisoning before. That must be new, modern, updated terminology.

JP-This whole summer it has been extremely hot-even after dark.  Never forget to wear sunscreen in the sun though since you are fair!

Russel-That is a term I had heard as a kid.  My husband too had been told he had sun poisoning when he was 12.  I guess it is maybe just used in the North East?

Marc-Thanks for stopping by to comment!
