Today I noted how differently every consumer shops for housing. What do you pay attention to?
Some buyers shop houses and don't go in the garage at all. Some don't ever go to the back yard. Some bring their flashlight so they can not only thoroughly inspect the garage, but every attic and crawl space imaginable. Today my client had me biting my nails -- we moved an old couch in the garage over to support the attic access ladder so he could scuttle like a bug up there and into an attic with beams that had him crouching tiger... it was insane. But he paid attention to every piece of that house -- good for him.
So the things I notice that a lot of people completely botch (to me) are things like colors of roofs. I love houses, head to toe. One of the things I think some people are really bad at is picking out a roof style, color and all that jazz. I know it's way up there and barely noticeable to some people, but a lot of us do care! I notice the street, the driveway, the walkways, the placement of trees and bushes, the whole thing. I am a home office and UPS and FedEx trucks leak a lot of oil on my street right in front of my house seemingly by the hour. So my area of the street needs to be power washed terribly and as insane as it is to some people, I would actually do that before I put it on the market. Point is, someone may pay more attention to the oil on the road they have to avoid when they get their mail vs. my landscaping. I don't want that kind of attention.
My point is we all pay attention to the things important to us. It's funny to me how many consumers pay little attention to a lot of important stuff. Garages, back yards, attics -- all those are really important! Even if you're disinterested, you need to check out everything before you buy it! Every square inch is part of the deal, so don't ever neglect to check it all out!
