Dove Season - Its a Texas Thang...

texasWednesday Sept 1 2010 is the opening day of Dove Season in Texas. It will cause confusion, panic and 911 calls all across the DFW area from folks that have recently moved to Texas. It can be quite unsettling your first year in the DFW area. If you live near agricultural land you may be awakened at the crack of dawn to the sound of shotguns blazing away in a random pattern designed to ruin your peaceful morning.

its nothing personal, its D O V E  S E A S O N ! ! !

911Here is how the opening day will typically go...

Wife: Honey there are men in camo in the neighbors field with guns!!!

Husband: What are they doing?

Wife: Shooting at the sky, call the police!!!

Husband: Relax dear I read Brent's blog and they are just hunting birds...

Wife: Well that proves it, men have two brains, one is lost and the other is out looking for it...

Texas has many interesting cultural traditions, foods, sayings, items of clothing or even attitudes, but this one might throw you for a loop if you are not from an area with a deep hunting tradition. So just put in some ear plugs and endure it for a weekend or two and it will fade away...

shellsUntil next year and then they will be back, banging away and staring at the sky.

Keep in mind that there are many agricultural fields and cattle ranches on small pieces of property surrounding all our local cities like: McKinney, Allen, Fairview, Lucas, Frisco and Denton. There are regulations as to the size and location of the property to make it legal for dove hunting, but if there are hunters in the field the odds are high they have checked it out and and have permission.

...and in case no one has said it to you yet:

Brent & Deb,

Got to know when those huntin' seasons hit, that some people are gonna' go missin'.

You mentioned your ranch in Coalgate.

Our field rep for Farm Bureau ins was a young man from Coalgate.. Boyd (just went blank on last name.. a senior moment).  :)

I get through there every once in a while.

@Judi - We have a huge blackberry patch on the ranch. I have to shoo the deer away to pick some for my girls, but man do they taste sweet! Never had a chemical on them, only the rain God provides. Take care...

@Ricki - Come on now, sleeping in on Saturday morning is so overrated... I can't tell you how many clients are shocked by this.

@Jeff & Grace - Luckily birdshot sounds like rain and does no damage on the way down. I hope you guys have a great week!

Really?  They allow shotguns within a 100 mile radius of the city limits?  OH WAIT...It's Texas!  Duh, Bob!  Great post!
