Garden GlovesGardening is very rewarding, and very hard work - but it's even harder on your hands! Your hands are the tools you use most in the garden - aside from needing them to use any other tool,  they're also often drafted into service digging, dividing, weeding, spreading mulch... Because of this, we need make sure to protect our hands, which means gardening gloves.

For general garden use there are a LOT of different types of gloves, but the best ones these days seem to be the spandex/ lycra composites. They fit incredibly well (even with the one-size-fits-all options), have no absorption at all, wick moisture away, and because of the hard wearing nylon on palms and fingers, last with hard use for at least the season. These are great gloves for the ladies, but a little girlish for most guys. Now, if you're looking for the same features in a more masculine glove, Gardening Glovestry Bionic gloves (this is the same company that supplies both the MLB and NFL) as they're both tough and convenient…

Many people don't like wearing gloves, so the answer there may be one of the new spray-on gloves, which is a silicon spray that seals your hands from grime and oils (from things like poison ivy).

The bottom line is, whether enjoying your garden or doing yard work, you need to protect your hands. They're the only pair you've got!

Mike,

I was not aware of the spray-on hand protection. That's a product I'llhave to try. That will come in handy for poison ivy and small, simple shade-tree auto maintenance jobs.

I'm guilty!  When I'm done gardening.... my next chore is to get the dirt out from under my finger nails.  You would think I'd learn!
