Today I was told I was not a team player. I'm moody, cranky, and I'm only nice to everyone else when I need something. Otherwise I'm a witch (or something that rhymes). Or at least that is what I was told.
I am in business for myself. I'm in competition with everyone in my office, including the broker.
Now don't get me wrong, I try to be nice and decent to others in my office. If I need to go "downtown" I always ask if anybody needs anything, especially in summer when there can be 5 cruise ships with 15,000 people descending on our community of 30,000. I try really hard to always be nice to the office manager/receptionist because I've been in her shoes, or at least in a different industry. Since I live "out the road" I'm always willing to check on vacant houses, drop off brochures etc on my way to and from the office, within reason.
I occasionally even order pizza to share, or bake cookies for the office. In winter I even bring peanut brittle.
I've always failed at office politics. I don't like conflict, detest loud people, and I'm way too easily distracted when there's too much commotion in the office or it gets too busy. I get sucked in, no matter how much I try to the "He Said-She-Said" To deal with that, I work from home a LOT.
Most people in my office only do real estate they can drive to. I specialize in remote, truly remote property that can require a boat, float plane or even helicopter or kayak to get to. I carry a large inventory - usually 20 - 30 listings at a time. I do this without an assistant, although I truly do need the help.
I also volunteer way too much. I'm trying to figure out where to cut back, but they all are good causes:
1. I'm the Treasurer for the Southeast Alaska Board of REALTORS.
2. I'm on the Board of Equalization for the City & Borough of Juneau (property tax appeals)
3. I'm the fundraising chair for Juneau Youth Wrestling
4. I was the prize coordinator for the Golden North Salmon Derby and managed to raise $87K in prizes for this annual event in 2007.
5. I'm in charge of the Ladies Wild Game Feed (Going on EIGHT YEARS) which usually raises 2-4K in money for Juneau youth activities with a one-night event each year.
6. I'm President of Southeast Alaska Master Gardeners. This one has been especially tough, trying to salvage an eliminated Cooperative Extension Agent position - and we may have won.
I'm stepping down from Juneau Youth Wrestling and I'm going to ask the CBJ Assembly about removing me from the BOE. It seems like a conflict anyway. Doesn't matter though - these activities represent hundreds of hours each year of my time and energy.
Did I mention I have a husband and two teenagers that still like me?
So, is real estate a team sport? With a team, everybody wins or loses.
In wrestling, there is only one winner in each weight class. You cheer on your teammates - unless they are in your weight class... then it's each man for himself until the finals.
So, is real estate a team sport? What can I do now? What am I missing?
Debbie - you may want to consider branching out and becoming your own broker so you don't have to let the negativity of others bring you down. Having the negativity of office politics out of your life may bring you a lot less stress and provide you the freedom to really grow your business the way you want to.
If you don't have the time in yet to branch out on your own then just grin and bear it and get your training and business plan in order so you can break free when the time is right!
