The Peoria fire station at Lake Pleasant has begun using windmills to help power the station.  The pilot program, which began 5/13, was funded by federal stimulus money and is expected to produce 40% of the stations electricity needs.

Peoria has joined Bag Central Station, a group of Valley municipalities and grocery stores that has collections bins for plastic shopping bag, which can't be recycled by Peoria's curbside recycling program.  Some of the bag that are collected are donated to the Peoria Community Action Program, which uses the bags to deliver meals to seniors.

Peoria is testing a new hybrid garbage/recycling truck that uses energy created by heat during breaking to supplement power used during initial acceleration. 

Peoria is recycling tires in their paving process.  The tires are used in an asphalt rubber chip seal that adds years to the life of old pavement, provides better skid resistance, costs a fraction of most other surface treatments and helps the environment by recycling old tires.

Peoria has before and after school programs starting with the first day of school on August 9th.  These programs are located at the elementary schools and are for kids from kindergarten through 14 years old.  Morning programs run from 6 am until the start of school and cost $6 per day.  Evening programs start at the end of the school day and end at 6 pm and cost $9 per day, which includes a snack.  Morning and evening programs together cost $14 per day.  The program also offers care on early release days as wells as all day care on some of the school holidays breaks including the winter and spring breaks.  The all day care is $24 per day and runs from 6 am to 6 pm.  For more information, contact 623-773-7688 or 623-773-7108.

Vistancia lowers costs with a new energy saving program.  The first phase of the program retrofitted all of the existing landscape lighting from 50 watt halogen bulbs to 9 watt cfl bulbs, for a six month savings of 31%.  The next phase, which is already under way will replace 100 watt sodium bulbs with 23 watt cfl bulbs.  In addition, Vistancia is a dark sky community, which uses low-level outdoor lighting to preserve the night sky and Vistancia has started a ladybug release program for eco-friendly insect control, which involves participation of the kids from the two area elementary schools.
