Understand What you are Getting Into

Living here in Gettysburg Pa can be fun, informative and yes a big pain in the butt. The chapel in the picture is causing a huge controversy here in Gettysburg. This building is built on a formerly useless rocky empty lot, a gentleman moved here from NH and erected a Civil War chapel, but it was a tent (temporary). During the winter the tent was destroyed and this is what was constructed in it's place. No big deal, one would think.

Civil War Chapel Gettusburg Pa

Problem, this is a permanent structure and the Gettysburg wants their pound of flesh, to the tune of $10,000+ in renovations, heck they want bathrooms installed and much more. There are really two things that stand out in this situation, one, the Gettysburg Boro councildoes not understand how many tourists this structure brings into town, tourists that spend money in town, and keep the town flush. They only see how they can flex there powerful muscles. Two, the owner of the structure should have done his due diligence and knew the rules beforehand. Don't get me wrong, I understand where the boro government is going with this, but when buying a home in a new town, know what the rules are.

All too often people move to a new state and fail to understand the differences in how states operate. Tax structures and collection are different, if the town is historic as is the case with Gettysburg Payou can pretty well expect building restrictions. Be prepared to deal with HARB (Historical Architectural Review Board), this is always fun. From my experience these people and boards start out with the best of intentions and then  the power gets to their heads and it turns sour. I am curious how this is going to play out, but the lesson is do your homework, know what you are getting into.

One would be wise to contact Gettysburg Gerry when moving to your area of PA. This would be a wonderful story for the press to get a hold of.

Gerry,

Interesting conundrum for the city. Certainly, there are tax and safety issues to address, even though it possibly brings in revenue. It would be hard for anyone to say how many people came to Gettysburg only to see that chapel.

Gerry as if moving to new territory isn't enough, added caution need to be taken in situations we have long taken for granted.  Our familiarity does not always transport across state lines.

Gerry, it really doesn't mastter where you are, whenever one attemps to build a structure, there is no excuse for not checking with the towns first. If he were trying to put this up in the middle of 20 acres that he owns there might be a blind eye, but this appears to be a structure waiting for a law suit, which would include the town for allowing it to be built. This is going to be interesting

I am wondering how they got this far without someone shutting the project down.  Or did they just want to wait until they could collect their pound of flesh.

This certainly is going to be interesting and Jane you ask a question that is being asked all over town, this structure is one block from the main square, what did they miss in the construction stages...

Don't hold the fact that he is from New Hampshire against me!  LOL!  How crazy that they want that structure to have a bathroom!

Hi Gerry! It is like that here with the Coastal Committee. They police what can be built or remodeled by the beach. Tiffany
