Dog Beach is in the San Diego community of Ocean Beach, and according to legend, verified by a commemorative plaque, Dog Beach was the first leash-free dog beach in the nation. Although you can find people there without dogs — some just watching the dogs, some jogging through — the beach is set aside for dogs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Dog Beach also happens to be one of the few areas in San Diego County where you can see sand dunes as most beaches are surrounded by cliffs or buildings.

That's great the Mission Valley community has places that dogs can go to have FUN and make friends! Thanks for the great localism post and the slideshow was entertaining Jim!
Jim - I love dog beaches, and today I took my dog to the jetty where most of the sand is washed away. but it is a place where the dogs can run and swim off leash!
Wanda - I'm not really a dog person but I do enjoy watching them when someone else owns them. The dogs at Dog Beach all seem to be so happy to be off a leash, frolicking in the water, chasing whatever is thrown out there, and being free to pee and poop wherever they please, knowing that their owners will pick up after them. LOL
Sharon - I think I know of the jetty of which you speak. The Dog Beach in Ocean Beach is right by the jetty, too, at the mouth of the San Diego River. Right next to Dog Beach are a bunch of volleyball courts, and if a ball goes too far out of bounds, it's not unusual to see one of the big dogs slapping the volleyball around.
If I'm ever in the area with Lilly, Butter and Rhondo - we'll stop by!
Thanks,Jim.
Jack - They'd have a little competition in the monster department.
Chris - Let me know when so I can get some pictures.
Jim,
That's a dog gone good post.
Seriously though; dog friendly beaches in the city provide a much needed outlet.
Steve
Interesting tidbit about it being the first one in the nation. Love the pictures!
My boxer, Buster, would love this. So would I. Nothing's better than a walk on the beach. Add in your best friend and it's heaven.
Debra - I thought that was interesting, too.
Anne - Although the big dogs that get soaked in the water and then roll around in the sand and then come by you to shake for about 15 seconds..... LOL
