Anime Iowa 2010: Cosplay means lots of hugs in the real world

Made it to the Marriott to take some cool photos of Anime 2010 and got a bit more insight into the world of Anime - Japanese animation. I have a curious mind and it was a lot of fun learning about something that I didn't have the first clue about just two days ago.Turns out these young people are used to being accosted in the street and were happy to pose for photos. They were open and friendly and Mitch and Holly even filled me in on some background info on the Anime Conventions and the costume Holly was wearing. She's the White Mage in the slide show. Of course everyone knows what a Mage is, right? If you're into fantasy you will. I have sons who are into online gaming, so I had no trouble "getting" what Mitch was talking about with the difference between white and black Mages. I think even without my in-house experiences I would have understood. I'm a Brit. We have Camelot and Merlin and Co. Good and bad sorcerers is not exactly a brand new concept!

Talking to these kids, it seems that cosplay gets you hugs galore off-line from fans who identify with their on screen characters.
And if you don't know what cosplay is you will just have to read my last post to find out. At any rate I loved the idea of that and totally get why these conventions are such a huge hit. It's an opportunity for fans to bring their virtual world into the real world. How cool is that?

Sounds like fun. My 16 year old just said he wouldn't buy a house if he knew LARPers lived in it (Live Action Role Players), mostly because his 13 year old sister adores Anime. but only some specific type or something. Now we can squabble about this tonight. We like Renaissance Fair, too!

That's funny Leslie. Not a discussion we've had in our house. Maybe because both my sons were heavily into live action role playing. (Not so much these days). I actually like this idea of bringing Anime into the real world. Seems like a natural way for it to evolve for me.

Thanks for expanding my vocabulary for me too - LARPers. Good to know.

Denise: I lived in japan for four years. Anime is just a part of life there. I'm not a big fan myself though. Just doesn't interest me in the slightest.

Hi Denise, I am guessing that you really enjoyed this. And I would bet you and the kids would have loved Comic-Con here in San Diego. Understanding it is not exactly the same thing but people getting together to share their interests is always enjoyable.

Great Article Denise.

Looks like you had a great time. I really like the video, the costumes are so cool.I'll bet they have fun putting that together too.

A Mariiott? Is that in Coralville? I don't recall one there.

BTW I love your website! Very clean and easy to read and navigate. Good job.

Thanks Jerri. Yes we do have a Marriott in Coralville. It's in a new development area close to the river. The Iowa City Area Association of Realtors is moving to that area this month too. Coralville has probably changed quite a bit since you were here. I've been here 10 going on 11 years and am totally amazed at the changes in that time!

Hi Denise ~ What fun! I saw your link to the local newspapers's photos of this but am psyched to find your own slideshow - it's super. It's just fabulous that kids have this to get enthused about - I can think of worse ways for them to spend their time at that age.

Oh I couldn't resist driving by to see what all the fuss was about Liz. I'd been showing homes all day and was totally whacked, but that was really no excuse since it's right around the corner from where I live! It was worth it too. I totally agree with you. There are much worse ways for kids to be spending their time!
