IT....IS...A...SCAM!!!!!!!!!!

For the last time...it is NOT for rent!  Don't send your checks to Africa!  My seller is not temporarily living in Africa.  Even though the e-mail address is his name and his name is at the bottom of the letter, he did not write it!  Yes, the rental amount quoted is a steal...and the person collecting it is a thief!

I know it appears to be too inconsequential of a crime for the overworked police to deal with it. Craigs List has become the latest venue for thieves to steal from unsuspecting renters.  They pay for a domain name that appears legitimate (usually the sellers name or the address of the property).  Then they take out a free ad in Craigs List advertising the property that is listed for sale, listing it as a rental.  The first communication sent out after interest is expressed is very gentle (although a bit illiterate).  If the renter pursues it a little further, the letters get a little more forceful.

So, I am going to give renters searching on Craigs List some advice.  If they can't meet you at the property with a key, it is probably a scam.  If they ask you to send money before you have a key, it is a scam. If they live in Africa, IT IS MOST DEFINITELY A SCAM.  If the rental price seems too good to be true, it is a scam. If you still don't believe it, go to the property, get the contact number for the listing agent and call them. Ask them if it is for rent....and they will tell you IT IS A SCAM!

Oh my goodness, Paula, it is outof control! It seems as if every single one of my listings ends up as a rental on Craigslist. Unfortuantely, I live in a military town and many of the people who call me about them are out of town. In one case, I had a renter call me and say he was ready to pick up the keys! Thank God, he called before he sent off the security deposit to the overseas address.

It is so true that if something seems too good to be true, then it isn't true, but these thiefs are getting people every time. Craigslist does nothing about it, not even take down the ad when I report it.

Pretty discouraging.

Hi Lisa!
Believe me, it is very real. One of my listings is on its third attempt at someone listing it for rent on Craig's List!

Hi Julissa!
We even had someone moving into a property (this one had sold last year and was being used as income property), but the "landlord" was not the owner! Pretty scary!

Paula,

Craigs List is a great concept and its a shame that its been taken over to a degree by scammers. I never recommend any of my clients deal with Craigs List.

Paula, Craigslist has become too much of a problem, even for listings.  I just don't post there anymore.

Hi Bob!
It doesn't seem to matter if we post there...they find a way to turn it into a rental no matter what!
