I have always been raised to recycle - my mother recycled 30+ years ago in New Jersey, when we had to drive the magazines/newspapers, aluminum, and glass to the recycling center one town over.  We actually rinsed the aluminum foil before recycling it!

Since I have recycling in my genes, so to speak, I was very surprised to learn recently that putting your recycling out the night before, while convenient, it's not good for the newspaper or other paper products in your recycling bin.  Why? It actually ruins the paper products and makes them completely unsuitable for the recycling process.

If you can, leave your recycling in the house until the morning of pick up, or keep your bin fully loaded in your garage (space permitting) until the morning of.

I know it's a bit inconvenient, however, how frustrating is it to think you are doing good, when in reality, you may not be?

In any case, continue recycling!

our town does recycling and the town provides two large containers that are outside and that's where you put your trash....we have one for recycling and one for regular trash pick up....

My county doesn't have curbside recycling (which irks me). I have to pay a private company to pick it up. I agree with your recycling tips. Good post.

Recycling should be a part of everyone's routine ... it not only saves the environment, but saves money too.

This is an excellent and useful post!  I am a huge advocate of recycling and finding more ways to re-use and reduce waste.  I have been known to re-use foil and I never buy napkins/paper towels.

I am delighted that more and more people are writing great posts about the importance of recycling!  I actually live in a very rural area and I have to take quite a drive to recycle, but is feels good to know that I am doing my part.

Thanks for all your comments - I realize I should have clarified we have open top recycling bins here in Jax Beach, hence the advice, but the comments make me realize how fortunate I am to have curbside recycling!  Kudos to all who recycle!
