LOUDOUN COUNTY AND VIRGINIA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION ANNOUNCEMENT ON BRIDGES

The Virginia Department Of Transportation has recently inspected bridges in Loudoun County and
made the public announcement that the bridges are safe.

Nine bridges in Loudoun County are defined as "structurally deficient", but according to VDOT, the bridges that are open are safe for driving.  Five of the nine defined a structurally deficient have been determined to be "functionally obsolete", defined by AAA as requiring significant maintenance and repair to remain in service.

Loudoun County has 437 bridges and 16 percent are considered functionally obsolete, but safe.
Wear and tear on bridges in Loudoun County and Loudoun County roads is understandable following the
explosion of housing construction and population growth in the county in the past 10 years.

The bridges considered "functionally obsolete" are all in rural areas, not high density residential areas.

Lenn--How were you able to resist using the headline "Loudoun Bridges Falling Down"? I know the pun is bad but the message is really not a joke in light of what has happened in MN. It is nice to see that the wakeup call has sounded nationally.

Teri.  No way I am going to use the words Loudoun and falling and b_ _ _ _ _ _ in the same sentence.   That is funny.

Lenn..sounds like Virginia is in better shape than we are here...

NH has MANY small rural bridges that they really clamped down on August 1st. There was a story in last nites paper about two different circumstances (a home-modular- and a business that weren't being allowed to continue with construction because of the bridge access. Note: these were perfectly acceptable July 31. These are not major road bridges...they are over piddley little streams...Typical DOT

James.  Thanks for commenting.  I'll get some photos tomorrow.  There are some lovely rural bridges in the county.

Joan.  All you need is a major bridge in MN to fail and every one starts thinking bridge safety.

If I remember correctly 35W was considered structurally deficient but safe!  We Minnesotans are adjusting.  Not only is our main north/south 35W artery closed because of the bridge, but this weekend the east/west artery is completely closed as they are adding a lane to compensate for the detoured traffic coming from the closed 35W.  We're all taking round about ways to get to the other side of the river these days.  Just so we don't have to go back to ferry boats!

Teri.  I like your sense of humor.  Mine was on a break when I read the Loudoun news.

Bonnie.  What is so interesting to me in reading this article about Loudoun bridges, many of which are in rural Western Loudoun County, where I work and travel almost daily - accross these same bridges, two of which I've been detoured around for the past couple of weeks since the MN disaster.

Gives you the chilly-wiggles.

IMO, which has no affect on what the politicians decide to do with our money, is that no American would have objected to spending whatever was necessary to make ALL of our briges save.

I suppose there isn't enough electoral "juice" in making bridges safe.

Oooops.  My cynicism just slipped out.
