Looking For Takeaway Ideas For Listings | Any Suggestions

Hi Agents,

I'm curious and on the hunt for informative, or soft-touch promotional materials that may have caught your eye as a buyer agent when you've shown a particular property.

In addition to a colorful and creative in-house brochure on a nice brochure stand, what other takeaways do you install in your listings to help spread your name around town?  I've seen promotional pens, water bottles, notepads, candy wrappers, etc. But have you ever visited a listing and said to yourself, "Wow, I surely have to do that for my listing?"

I know that for many of us the budget is extremely tight, but you just never know the true shelf life of every single piece of marketing that you can leave behind in the property.

Any thoughts?  What else can we do to market ourselves and give away something with our name on it?  Think of the different people who may be 'curious' or 'just stopping by' your listing:

  • Sellers family members
  • Parents of kids stopping by for a play-date
  • Neighbors
  • A contractor

These could be missed opportunities.

If a buyers' agents are showing a home, they probably don't want their client to pick up anything that the listing agent may leave in the property.

An  open house is probably the best opportunity for takeaways.

My favorite item, which always draws a smile or a laugh, and opens people up to conversation, is a box of salt with your label on it.

Here is what my label looks like.

Salt Label

I get mine printed on glossy paper, and it actually looks better than the Morton Salt label.

If you make these labels, be sure to follow FDA guidelines and list the ingredients.  I would be happy to send you my MS Publisher file via email.

Wow Bob!  That's very creative indeed. Thanks for sharing. I can imagine that it's a real conversation piece.

Not only do the salt boxes bring a laugh or smile to people, they are also long-term keepers.  People will keep a box of salt in a kitchen cabinet as long as it has salt in it.  Imagine every time someone opens the cabinet that the first thing they see is the salt, with your picture or information on it.

Bob, I also remember one time when I was at a home inspection, the listing agent had a magnet/sticker on the hot water heater. Very creative.

One thing I have been giving out for the past few months is a small bottle of antibacterial hand gel...it's great for buyers, too, when you are out showing...it's completely customized, of course, with my logo and contact info. It won't last forever, but it does stay around (and in women's purses) for a while...longer than many consumable items such as water or candy.  It's also easy to find an excuse to hand one to someone, even if they're not a client.  ;-)

We've been reading about hyper-local blogs... how about a hyper-local brochure?  A 3-fold local guide to shopping, transportation, schools.  Use a few photos to break up the text, add your contact info and a small photo, but make the content so compelling that even the co-op agent wants a copy.  Call it something like "Where we shop, play, and learn"... include a local map... you take it from there (and send me a copy if you try it.)

Wow!  These are great ideas.  Tamara, the best thing I saw were customized water bottles with the house on it.   Kind of a waste for anything but an open house, however.   Would be a great idea in the summer.  Doesn't last as a keepsake as long as the others though.  My former broker would hand out those sticky circular jar openers - that was a great idea.  They really work and people will keep them in their kitchen forever!

A magnet with local handy numbers would be good too (inspired by Margaret's idea above).   Since you do so much in Del Ray or Old Town, perhaps your favorite stores or take out places in the neighborhood with your branding on it.

Thanks Susan!  I love the idea.  I keep it on me, especially useful after showing a lot of homes.  Who knows what kind of germs we pick up when accessing lockboxes, touching door knobs and stairways, etc.

Hi Margaret, that's a good idea as well.  It may make sense to incorporate that into the in-house brochure, but it can be a good conversation piece as an open house give away too.

Thanks Carol: Phone numbers of handymen would be great too.  A couple of years ago, I used to give the dry erase boards with the 'grocery list' for the refrigerator.  Maybe I'll bring that back.  That's something that lasts and you can use it repeatedly.
