Another Five Things All Kids Should Learn - or at least understand!

I wrote Five Things All Kids Should Learn and I had some comments on and off the post.  Here are 5 more.  Some may be more relevant to electronic culture and so are new rather than timeless - but as the electronics are here to stay  . . . . .

  1. Your Cell Phone is for my Conveyance.   If I am paying for it and I cannot reach you on it I will stop paying for it.  By the way do not Text Me!  I am an old fart.  I want a phone call.  My fingers are not that small and I cannot understand what you think is plain English.

  2. Maybe Means No - But I am just too tired to argue with you about it.

  3. Character Counts - If he/she will lie to his/her parents to hang out with you will he/she lie to you about hanging out with someone else?

  4. Yes I have made mistakes - I have done many foolish things, not all of them I will share with you.  I make rules and enforce them not because there is anything wrong with you, but because I was like you once.  I know what you are going through.  I want you to learn from my mistakes, not your own.

  5. Keep your Clothes on - If you get naked there will be a camera somewhere and those pictures will end up on the Internet if not texted to your entire school.

Bonus Very Important Thing to Know!

Love is not a feeling or passion (Although passion can be a part of love).  Love is a decision to put others before yourself.  Love is denying self for the good of others.  Love is what keeps me up late and gets me up early as a parent; neither of which I feel like doing.  Love is what makes me work hard and give up things I want for things you want.  Love is what has me going to 3 youth baseball games on a Saturday and out doing something with you kids every night of the week.

Ask yourself when struggling with what to do - Is it love or lust?  Will this person put my needs ahead of their own?  Will they put my children's needs (when you have them) ahead of their own?  Does this person really love me?

Hi Gene, this is a great post. Yes, every kid should learn these tips. All of them are important but  especially keeping the clothes on.

Gene - First I was cracking up (#1 & #2 are hilarious) and then the most important one gave me a lump in my throat.  I bet you're a great Pops Gene.

Hi Gene, I like #4 the best. My father-in-laws favorite saying was "do as I say, not as I do" #4 reminded me of him. jay
