Your local Chamber of Commerce, what do you think?

So I have been thinking of joining my local area Chamber of Commerce and I am wondering what people think about it.  I have spoken with my broker about it-and it seems like a good idea.  From what I understand it is useful when it comes to referrals and networking.  I have never been too interested in politics and am wondering if I join, will I have to deal with them, or should I start learning more about politics.  I believe my chapter holds monthly meetings and luncheons and get togethers.  There is also a discount program from other businesses that is available to its members.  It seems a bit costly, and before I decide to join, I was just wondering what others, who do belong to their Chamber, what you think?   Thanks!

Penny, you will get out of it exactly what you put into it.  The cost is nothing.  The hours you devote to it will be many if you expect a good return.  Consider Citizen Ambassador programs.  I haven't done it because my kids are still mostly at home, but I know it's helped a couple of agents in my area quite a bit.

Hi Penny................The Chamber is really what you make it.  I belong because our Company belongs.  We also get all of the discounts available at several local businesses.  Some people in our office NEVER attend a chamber mixer, while others go religiously each month and do very, very well in networking.  It is quite simple to just walk up to a fellow business person and start up a conversation.  It really does work if you want it to.

I think it is a terrific idea to join and you will be getting some great contacts and referrals.   But once again, just like real estate, it is what you make it.

Penny,

I have been a member of the chamber in my area for a couple of years now & i have picked up so much business from all the other members.

I know that every area is different, but in my area the buisness owner is the one that pay's for the membership & you go in support of your firm. Check with your broker about having them help pay all or half of the annual expense.

As far as politics, most of the people that go to the networking meetings are everyday people trying to make new contacts & pick up new business. I'm not saying that there aren't some politics in the upper members of the chamber.

The chamber has worked very well for me,

Good luck,

Yes, it is important in getting to know other business people in your community. I am active in mine is Saline, MI. I served for 6 years on the Board of Directors. I learned so much and got to know many many people. It is work as it is a voluntary organization for the most part. The paid staff can not handle all the work and events. But, it is worth it.

The Chamber is simply another way of increasing your visibility in the community--like blogging on AR---and thereby gaining referrals.   As soon as I get all my AR and other online efforts under control, we'll be active in our local Chamber.  Great post.
