I just Spent $250 Because I Was Stupid...Learn From My Mistake!

How many times have you gotten out of your car and worried that the GPS was showing or that you should hide your camera.  Well, if you haven't had that worry, worry NOW!

I returned from a full day of staging and was VERY tired.  I carried my laptop bag, notebook, and other car stuff into my house.  What did I forget?  MY PURSE!  I never leave my purse in the car and can't believe I was so stupid.  Well, the person who broke into my car last night was thrilled with my stupidity.  They were also thrilled with 9 of my equally stupid neighbors.

I live in a nice (very low crime rate) neighborhood in Cincinnati.  I never imagined that someone would use a hammer at 2 AM to break into my car and take stuff.  They did and someone might be planning the same thing in your neighborhood.  My smart neighbors with nothing valuable visible from outside the car made it through the night unscathed.  I was not so lucky.  My insurance agent sent the following e-mail to several clients after the event last night.

"We received several insurance claim phone calls this morning regarding customers last night, with laptops, gps; cell phones, windows broken out...   remove anything of value from your car, even if it is not valuable, but looks like its bagged w/ something inside it, remove it...and remove the temptation for theft/vandalism.

I recommend that you do this because the minimum risk you take is $250 for a new window.  The maximum loss...whatever  you left in your car!

Lynda, Cincinnati-ans are really nice.  And very few of us break into cars!  I hope you enjoyed your visit.

Hi Jo~  So sorry that happened to you!  You just never know when someone is going to get a hare brained idea and try stealing instead of working for what they want!

Sorry that happened to you, but thank you for sharing your story here so that others can learn from it.  I always wonder if my bag of staging tools (no real value to anyone, but it holds all my nails, hammer, small tools, etc.) is safe when left in my car.  I guess from reading your post, it may attract a thief.

Sorry to hear that happened to you.  Good advice however. I never leave anything in my car, and if I absolutely have to I at least lock it in the trunk out of sight

Jo, it is also such an invasion of your privacy.  Since times are so tough, we are having thieves and scammers come out of the woodwork.

I keep a gym towel in my car and cover my valuables in the passenger seat.  My purse is on the floor of the passenger's seat and I take my wallet with me....and don't leave it in the car...remembering to LOCK my car is more of a task!

Well that is totally a bummer. Ugh. I am sorry you had to go through that. My car isn't outside at night but I have been known to leave my purse in sight in my car other places! We have even had people breaking into cars at our church while people are in service so that church has a warning about leaving valuables in cars! And I likewise live in a very very low crime suburb.

Ugghhh... sorry to hear this happen to you, Jo.  I too park my car in the garage. However, when I'm out and about, I'll put things in the truck so it's out of sight.

And like Don said above, it's absolutely an invasion of privacy. Again, I'm so sorry this has happened.

So sorry to hear of your trouble. Lesson learned.  At an Ikea store here in Toronto, in broad daylight, someone broke the window of a car to steal what they thought was a Coach brand purse. It was actually a dipaer bag and in it was a camera with pictures of the recent birth of the baby. It was very upsetting to the mother and we all felt badly for her. The lesson here is take EVERYTHING that is valuable to you out of your car. You may know it is a diaper bag but the thief did not. Imagine how disappointed he/she was when all they found inside was diapers. NO the bag did not turn up in a local garbage bin.

Michelle,

You take the prize for the saddest of stories!  We can all replace stuff but I am sure those parents will always be sad about the missing photos in the family album.  With my first headed off to college I think I will cherish those photos even more!  Jo

Thanks so much for sounding the alarm.  Sorry your car was broken into, but it sounds like you learned a valuable lesson.  Thanks for taking the time to pass it on to us.

BTW....love the picture of the pillows on top of your blog. I have likewise have an entire row along the whole side of my warehouse with shelving and pillows stacked all in a row all the way down! love it. When I go into a store I have to say to myself....."put the pillow down". It's as bad as shoes!

Pillows...Did I hear you say pillows?  I taught a staging class last night and was explaining that pillows hide a MULTITUDE of sins.  Ugly couch...pillows!  Pretty couch...pillows!  Queen bed...pillows!  King bed...MORE pillows!  It's great and they are SO fun to buy!

Ouch !!! So sorry for your loss, I know I always feel so stupid when I do something like that. You always take your purse in the house and then the ONE time you leave it in the car...it is gone...hope that they catch the person or persons who did this..

Thanks Jo for reminding all of us that in this world we have to be ultra conscious of what we leave for other to want.  I do worry about my van because it is always chocked full of tools and staging equipment.  Maybe now I should move forward with tinting the back windows so that no one can see inside.  When I shop in Fresno (weekly) this is an issue because Fresno's crime rate is very high!

I have so appreciated all of the AR comments.  My take away from the whole experience is that we should be smart but not scared.  I have been more careful in the days since the break in and I have thought about some of your comments and experiences.  Truthfully though, I will choose in the future to make this a learning experience but not a source of fear of my surroundings.  I hope they catch the person that did this so that others in my community don't lose the time and money I did in dealing with this but I am choosing to move on...without leaving my purse in the car!

We received several insurance claim phone calls this morning regarding customers last night, with laptops, gps; cell phones, windows broken out...   remove anything of value from your car, even if it is not valuable, but looks like its bagged w/ something inside it, remove it...and remove the temptation for theft/vandalism

Great advice..even though a bit too late for all of you. Glad you carried all your other stuff inside. Good lesson..so sorry you learned it the hard way!
