Just a quick note to remind everyone that Hurricane Dean is tearing through the Carribean.

Dean became a category 4 storm overnight, after being anounced as a Tropical Storm a few days ago. Seems like as soon as he hit the Carribean Sea, the warm waters gave him the fuel to become strong.

Having been throught numerous hurricanes, as my collegues who have lived in Florida for a while have also have, I can really relate to this experience. A cat 2 storm is enough to make me nervous, a 3 might even make me leave the area.. but a 4 is a monster.

Consider the limited resources in these countries that are in the path of Dean and how the impact of a storm can cause so much more devastation due to weaker building types and varying construction materials. The ability to bounce back after a storm like this is quite different from being in the States. Food, shelter and dry clothes suddenly are not readily available.

Good news is that Dean is traveling at 18mph, which is pretty quick for a Hurricane. This means the storm will not linger and Frances did here a few back.. (we were locked up for 22 hours on that one.. she just stalled right over us!)

Please, stop and give a little prayer for the people bracing for this storm today, Sunday 8-19-2007.

and then you can give thanks for not being in the storm today ! :)

here is a link to see where Dean is..

Nick, I can relate dude, I was on a island for a hurricane and it isn't fun, you can't get in your car and evacuate. Also, I was here in 04, Charley, Frances and Jeanne... and Frances was here for 2 or 3 days, really did some damage to the beachside, closed our beachside office for a month. While watching the news, they were interviewing folks in Jamaca this am and they weren't all that concerened?? I'd be scared to death!

You folks go through more than we do although the "maybe might hit" Flossie was enought to worry. That's the only time I don't like living here....I worry too much because we have nowhere to run. I saw the news thing Lysa is talking about. A lady at the airport was GOING to Jamaica. What is wrong with this picture?

Nick, I have not been following this, but is Dean expected to hit Florida also or is it going to hit the US some where else?

Nick, my prayers are with them.  For the last two days we have had heavy winds, my open house signs were bent over from them, I knew it was the effects of Dean, even this far away.  A 4 is a monster for sure.  A 1 gets me scared even!  I am praying that it goes through there quickly and the damage is minimal.

George, Dean isn't expected to turn and hit us, but stranger things have happened.  I forget which one did just that a few years ago.  Turned a completely different path than projected and we got slammed.

Christy, in South Florida, just about everyone can relate :)  I do hope they get a break.

Ann, not in the midst, but still hoping Dean doesn't do too much damage to Jamaica and then the Tucutan peninsula and/or Texas.

Lysa, being on an island surely does limit your escape. Frances was grueling.. she decided to hang out tooooo long. All the beaches suffered along the coastline. Sad to see that kind of erosion overnight.  I guess that the people flying to Jamaica have a different perspective that we can't understand.  :)

Sally, we had a few rough years, but now we are ok. At least you folks have mountains, so I would be hiding in between two of them. I wonder if your roads along the coastline flood a little too easy, from the water coming down from the mountains + the ocean swelling up and being a part of that also. At least its paradise the other 364 days! :)

Hi George, we are not going to hit with Dean, but Texas might. I hope Dean gets a little weaker before making any landfall.

Hi Maggie, yesterday we had some winds and it was a reminder of what could be. A 1 seems like nothing, but it can do some serious damage, depending on the storms size and punch. Remember Katrina came through Browad as a 1 and still did some damage.. while no one really expected it.

David. Amen for safety.

Hi Ruth.. South Florida can relate to this. We are fortunate to have the resources to bounce back a little easier. hope all is well with these places that get hit by the storm

Katrina.. that's gotta be tough to hit at sunrise and starting a day like that. how do you sleep the night before? hope they are all ok.
