Green means many different things to many different people, so going green can be a confusing task. Here are a few suggestions on how to make your Germantown home green without all the fuss!

·         Use CFL Light Bulbs – These special light bulbs use 1/3rd less energy than the regular bulb which costs you less on your electricity bill and creates  less waste by the electricity company
·         Turn down your water heater – reducing your water heater temperature by 20 degrees can decrease your costs by 6-10%
·         Unplug unused chargers – Doing so will reduce your energy bill by 8%
·         Turn down your heat at night – This could result in a $150 savings annually
·         Low VOC Paints – VOCs are Volatile Organic Compounds which are negative gasses caused by paints, stains and varnishes. Low VOC paints will  reduce the harmful gasses you ingest while living in your home.
·         When you purchase new appliances, make sure they are energy star
·         Enroll in ‘green power’ such as Clean Currents.
·         Recycle! Check out what Montgomery County has to offer.
·         Make your own household cleaners
·         Use rain barrels for lawn and garden watering
·         Buy local – this will benefit not only the environment, but also local businesses

Believe it or not, even if we can’t do all of the things on this list, whatever we can do will make a difference! Your Germantown home can have a lower energy bill plus help sustain the environment!
