With the recent launch of ActiveRain Community Pages, we've had quite a few people ask us how they can create community pages within their cities or towns.

(I've also had a ton ask us how they can get their area cleaned up and get duplicates, misspellings and just plain wrong information removed......we are working on a way for you to be able to report these things through the site and hope to have that out in the future)

If there are communities within your town/city that you would like to add (maybe not even to sponsor, maybe just to be able to assign your content to get it on a community page) you can add the community by first going in as if you were going to create a new blog post.

You don't have to actually create a new blog post, but you need to get to the page where you would create one. From that page, go down as if you were going to assign the post to 'Localism' and check on the box. Then drill down to your city by selecting the State, and County and then the city. This will then display an ability to place the post into a specific community (as seen below)

You will then notice the 'Add Neighborhood' link . Clicking on that link will give you a map popup. Once the map pops up, you can manipulate the map to drill down (that term again, I can't think of a better one) on the center point of the community you would like to add. Hover your mouse over the map and right click on time. This will place a map marker on the map at the center point of the community. Then in the top field, fill in the name of the community you would like to add. (PLEASE DOUBLE CHECK THE SPELLING). Then click the 'add community' button and your new community will be placed on the list for your city.

and voila, your new community page has been created!

Thank you for working on something to help clean up the wrong information. For it to truly be a good consumer experience, cities and communities should only be listed once, and spelled correctly!

I still don't understand how all the suburbs got listed as communities under the main city... I guess people got overzealous while making pages.

Thanks for the information here about the community pages- and look forward to having the opportunity for some of them to be listed under the main city.

I can see how Community Pages will be much more effective than Localism, so I'm taking on two communities (in actually, neighborhoods) and by adding frequent relevant material I expect great things.

Melissa,

I have two more classes on the schedule. You can find the schedule on the ActiveRain University Blog here

Donna,

If you remember we awarded points for creating communities back at the launch of Localism. I would say yes, people got overzealous!

(oops, sorry Barbara, I was logged in as you to confirm your stuff was ported over from Localism in the correct fashion)

Barbara,

Yes, your communities carried over to ActiveRain. You can find them by going to your 'my home' page and then looking for the 'billing information' link on the left hand side of the page. Once you click on that link, it will take you to the billing info page and the four communities we moved over for you from Localism are a little bit down the page in the middle.

Clicking on the link for any of them will take you to that community. Once on the community page, look for the red 'update community sponsorship' link in order to fill in your community description, link and marquee photo.

Sweet!  Now that I have a community page I will add to it and make it really pop!  Can't wait!

"Hover your mouse over the map and right click on time."

Is that a typo, or does that mean hurry up?

I seem to be in schoolteacher mode today.

Oh, Bob, this is old news ;-)

I think that all of the relevant neighborhoods have been added for Waterbury, at least. But I may need to go in and create more communities for the other areas that I service.

I wasn't able to make the webinar yesterday on the new community pages, so I need to find out if those of us who were Localism sponsors will get that discounted rate, and what's with the points for uploading the marquee photos? Is that a one-shot deal, or does it apply to every community that we claim and post a photo for?

Oh, and can you post some links to what you guys consider great descriptions of communities? I think that mine are a bit...sparse....

Hi Bob

Thanks, it finally sunk in.  What do they say.... it takes something to be repeated 7 times for it to sink in... well - I think it only took 2x not bad.  Thanks for all your help.

It's very easy - except for finding the time to write your content and edit your photo to size for uploading.  Navigating the process is a breeze!

What a great tool to drive local searches to AR members! There are still quite a few sleepy little subdivisions to be "discovered" in the Houston area!! :)

I love the new community page feature. I've already started setting a page up, and discovered a great way to earn 2,000 ActiveRain points in the process.

Thanks for all you do, AR!

Bob -

When, after you have purchased one community within a city, does your picture begin appearing to the public in the unsponsored communities within that city?

3:25pm • #31

Jim,

It will begin to appear once your sponsorship is approved. Yours has been approved so it is showing now in other areas in addition to the one you are sponsoring. You have to be logged out to see it. Here is a snapshot of you showing up in another community in Eugene:

so even though you don't sponsor the Crest Drive community of Eugene, you are showing up there.

Oooops Dublin is a city.  It is not a neighborhood or subdivision in the City of Columbus.  It is NOT the only city listed as a community in the City of Columbus.

" Dublin is a city in Franklin, Delaware, and Union counties in the U.S. state of Ohio. The population was 31,392 at the 2000 census. In 2008, the population was estimated to be 38,536[3], and Dublin continues to be one of the fastest-growing suburbs of Columbus. Approximately 57,000 people live within the Dublin school district. "  That's from Wikipedia.

Based on Dublin being used as a community with in the city of Columbus ActiveRain has one person sponsoring every neighborhood in the whole city of Columbus, every community.  Legit  communities and those that are cities listed as "communities" which are cities.

How big is a community? I certainly understand the community concept in St. Louis or Memphis, for instance; but in a town like Cape Girardeau, the town is the community.
