For those who are just buying their first motorcycle helmet or replacing an older helmet, there are online resources providing an introduction to the styles, standards and selection process -- to insure you get the best fitting and safest helmet for your requirements and budget.
 
Good helmets range from about $100 to $500, from manufacturers including Z1R, HJC and Shoei.  For example, if you are  looking for a good full face, street riding helmet with a left-up chin guard (allowing you to eat or put on eye glasses without removing the helmet), they will start at just under $200 (Z1R, HJC), going up to around $500 (Shoei).
 
There are several helmet standards, but in the U.S. all should at a minimum meet the federal DOT standard. Without a "DOT" certification logo on the helmet that you wear when you ride you motorcycle in to be inspected, you will not be able to pass the inspection.
