Graeter's in Worthington, the real scoop

Greater's knows location, location, location applies to ice cream as well as real estate. In Central Ohio there's a Graeter's in the "downtown" of many of the suburbs.. well of course in Westerville Graeter's is "The Uptown." The Bethel Road Graeter's produces the ice cream for the Columbus franchised stores and this is the franchises office too. There are Graeter's Stores on Bethel Rd, in Bexley, Dublin, Easton, Gahanna, Grove City*, Pickerington, Powell, Upper Arlington, Westerville as well as Worthington.

Back to Worthington... The Greater's location in Worthington is at 654 High Street in Old Worthington. It's a walk to location from homes in Old Worthington, Kilbourne Village, Colonial Hills and other Worthigton neighborhoods. It's a walk to location from Riverlea. On summer evenings people line up for ice cream at Graeter's in Worthington.

Graeter'stared in Cincinnati in 1870. The company has been family owned and operated since 1870. According the their website "Currently the Graeter family operates 12 stores in Cincinnati neighborhoods and has 24 franchised stores located in Columbus, Dayton, Northern Kentucky, Lexington and Louisville."

Graeter's ice cream is still made in the French Pot process. A French Pot freezer produces only two (or two and a half) gallons of ice cream at a time. The Columbus Greater's production facility on Bethel Road does tours.

Graeter's chocolate chips (big pieces of chocolate, chunks really) are very popular but my favorite flavor of Graeter's Ice Cream is "Coffee." The Graeter's website says: "We infuse every 2 1/2 gallon batch of ice cream with a pot of exceptionally rich, 100% Arabica Bean coffee. We encourage any coffee fanatic to brew a fresh scoop each morning to start their day!"

* The Grove City Graeter's had a fire and is closed now according to the Graeter's website.

Thanks for playing. Spell check the title. LOL Hey, i have had problems with pictures too. It works better if file sizes get reduced. Either that or it is a wild coincidence that I reduce file sizes and then it works.

I had Worthington spelled wrong in the tag. Did you think it should be Greater's? Spell check does.

I spelled Worthington wrong in the comment on Chris's blog.

I worked with a man in Wisconsin in the early 80's who said the best ice cream in the US was in Cincinnati. when I tasted Greater's I knew it was what he was referring to. He used to bring it back on dry ice. Graeter's ships it that way.

It is not considered by many to be the best ice cream in Central Ohio, Jeni's in the North Market and Grandview is. Or some swear by Denise's in Clintonville.

Maureen - what a flagship post, I learned a lot! - Great info on Graeters and I loved finding out how close it was to all your local neighborhoods. We have family in Lexinton KY - it's where my husband grew up so I'll have to be sure and try some next time I'm there.

I have only been to Lexington once but what a great town. Try to find a Graeter's when you are there. The Columbus franchisee they has stores in so many important residential areas that more people know the name better than any other ice cream store IMHO.

The French Pot method.....I wonder how many other places still do that? I'm now intrigued. Sounds yummy by the way!

So, there's nothing Greater than Graeter's, eh? LOL

I have friends who used to live in Ohio and they often talk about the ice cream there. Enjoyed your post.

My weakness is the one in Powell because it's next door to City BBQ. My favorite is the raspberry chocolate chip. I LOVE those big pieces of creamy smooth chocolate.

just had Graeters last weekend! In Louisville, KY

Louisville is where I grew up and only about 85 miles from Cinci - Graeters home

They were sending so much Graeters to Louisville that they opened up a store and one with a factory where you can see it being made

I have to say that the batch I had wasn't as good as I remembered but it was fun to take my son

I should have had the Bourbon Ball instead of the Mocha Chip which just wasn't coffee-y enough.

My wife had her favorite - their best seller - Black Raspberry Chip!!

nothing down here like that... we have B&J, Haagen and a few Gelato places besides Tasty Delite

Graeters-that's tough to spell-sounds like a great ice cream venue!! My husband is really into ice cream and he'd love it too!!
