It's Not Trunk Monkey. . . . But It's Still Really Cool!

I'm taking a break from my regular Trunk Monkey posts to bring you one of my favorite things - Diet Coke and Mentos Geysers!

These are just too much fun to make, especially on a hot summer day when the economy is tight! ;) All you need is a 2 liter bottle of Diet Coke (or two, one is just not enough fun!) and a package of Mentos.
Set the bottle upright on a stable surface OUTSIDE (it's very messy!) like the sidewalk or in a parking lot with no cars nearby.
Open the lid of the soda.
Carefully drop in two or three of the mentos very quickly, and BACK UP IMMEDIATELY!
Stand back and watch the fun! Repeat with another bottle of soda and more mentos if desired.

Just remember to stand well back and to make sure that there is nothing blocking the top of the bottle. Enjoy the mayhem!

Wondering what it would look like if you set off a bunch at the same time? Wonder no more! ;)

They put the fun in summer didn't they.  I can just imagine how sticky it is and you smell like coke for weeks.  Kids will love it.

Hi Phly ~ Does it have to be Diet Coke? Not sure if I can spare one of my Diet Coke bottles. But the Coke left over from Christmas - that's another story...

OMG, the amount of time that would be needed to pull that off!  Wow!  Where do you find this stuff????  :)  Fun post, btw.  Good afternoon for me!

Judi - It's tons of fun! Last summer I must have spent a small fortune on diet coke and mentos making geysers and rockets! ;)

Barbara - And people say science is boring! We did one in my high school science class where we had to try to suck a milkshake up through joined straws from the ground floor to a 2nd floor balcony. (My science teacher was just awesome like that) It really did not go well at all, but it was so funny that no one cared and everyone got the point of the lesson. ;)

Janet - I recommend goggles and a poncho. ;)

Liz and Bill - I love watching it again and again. Then running out and trying it! ;) What can I say? Essentially I'm just a slightly taller than average kid. ;)

Craig - I don't know who first noticed it, but they are an absolute genius!

Elizabeth - It has to be Diet Coke, sorry. The aspartame (artificial sweeter) is what gives it so much power.

Joe - Dry ice is a little to volatile for my taste. I like all the mess, but not the loud boom. ;)

Chris - I actually learned about this one while in college. (about 5 years ago. . . wow, that makes me feel old!) It's not as time consuming as it looks and it's TONS of fun. You can pick up the stuff for it anywhere, which is partly what makes it so much fun! However, Cost Plus/World Market has a kit that you can get that contains a roll of mentos and a plastic pipe that makes for a HUGE geyser. It's so cool! ;) Oh. . and Good Mid-morning! ;)
