Upper West Side Brownstones, San Remo Apartments

The Upper West Side extends north from 72nd Street up to 96th Street and is bordered by Central Park West and Riverside Park. There are two #2 and #3 express subway stops on the Upper West Side at 72nd Street and 96th Street on Broadway. Both station head houses have have been recently renovated. The 96th Street station  has a futuristic looking glass dome. The new station opened but is expected to be completed next year. Both stations are located in the Broadway median. The 8th Avenue subway B & C trains run along Central Park West.

Upper West Side zoning does not permit buildings to be taller than 20 stories between 72nd and 96th Streets. The building are mostly pre war buildings. The Upper West Side is home to some extraordinary buildings. Landmarks of Art Deco, Beaux Arts, or Gothic Revival architecture, the great celebrity apartment buildings of Central Park West have many famous residents and the side streets are lined with trees and 19th century townhouse mansions and brownstones.

The Upper West Side is populated with some of Manhattan's most famous and desirable residential buildings, many are located on Central Park West. The Dakota, El Dorado, The San Remo Apartments,  The Oliver Cromwell, The Langham, The Kenilworth, Hotel Des Artistes, The Beresford and The Ardsley all feature spectacular apartments.

West End Avenue is one of Manhattan's most beautiful and quiet residential neighborhoods. The majority of buildings along West End Avenue are architecturally distinctive pre-war coops. West End Avenue has the longest stretch of pre-war architecture and ambience in Manhattan. Both sides of the avenue from West 87th to West 94th Streets are designated the Riverside-West End Historic Distric. 535 West End Avenue a new condo at 86th Street, a brick building marketed as 21st century pre-war, currently has some residences available for immediate occupancy.

Apthorp Apartments, the elegant full-block apartment complex built by the Astor family for the New York elite has converting its 163 apartments to condominiums. The landmark 1908 building has two addresses 390 West End Avenue and 2201-2219 Broadway between west 79th and west 78th streets.

The Ansonia is Broadway's most opulant structure. When The Ansonia opened in 1904 it was called: "The most technologically advanced apartment house in the world"

On Broadway the neighborhood's busiest boulevard there are several modern post-war Condos and Condops including: The Boulevard at 2373 Broadway, The Bromley - 225 West 83rd Stret, The Broadway - 2250 Broadway at 81st Street, The Alexandria - 201 West 72nd Street, The Savanah - 250 West 89th Street and The New West - 250 West 90th Street.

One of the Upper West Side's best-kept secrets is a tiny Tudor village tucked between Broadway and West End Avenue called Pomander Walk, built in 1921 to resemble the London set of a hit play of that era called Pomander Walk.

Riverside Drive is one of Manhattan's most desirable neighborhoods. Many of the pre-war apartments have direct Hudson River and Riverside Park views. The apartments are large many are classic six and classic Seven apartments.

The neighborhood below 72nd Street to 59th Street is called Lincoln Square. The area developed around The Lincoln Center complex.  Architecturally it is primarily made up of modern post-war high-rise apartment buildings. There are no zoning height restrictions in the area.

The neighborhood above 96th Street below 123rd Street is Morningside Heights the academic quarter of New York City and Home to Columbia University. It stretches irregularly to about 123rd Street between Morningside Park and Riverside Park on the upper Upper West Side of Manhattan. From the top of a 135-foot bluff, it overlooks the Hudson River on one side and Harlem on the other.

It is a true pleasure to walk along the Upper West Side and take advantage of the well established blocks, trendy boutiques, and restaurants. My favorites are: Fairway, Zabars, Citarella and the famous H&H Bagels all located on upper Broadway.

I love running into clients and friends on Broadway. They all love their dream homes on the Upper West Side. I'm happy I was able to help find them their coop, condo, condop apartment or townhouse home.

Hope to see you on Broadway!

What a great tour of the Upper West Side!  It's one of my favorite parts of Manhattan even though during my work life in the city I spent most of my time on the Upper East Side and then in Washington Heights.

Having now been to the upper west side (daughter lives at 97th and Columbus) and visits that metro on Broadway...it was a pleasure to read about the history.  I just sent you an email too...
